Bantwal, Dec 30: Buses came to a halt at Mudipu here on Tuesday December 30 due to a strike called by Nagarika Kriya Samiti demanding decrease in bus fares.

Addressing the protest, zilla panchayat member Santhosh Kumar Rai Boliyar said, "No one has gained from the various plans introduced by the central government including the reduction in fuel prices. The protest held today is only a symbolic one. If the authorities and bus operators do not listen to our demands, we will intensify the protests from January 7."

He further said, "After the fuel prices came down, we held negotiations with the bus operators and the departments concerned regarding the bus fare. There was no response from the bus operators in the preliminary meeting called. Hence we have held this symbolic protest. If their attitude of not responding continues, we will change the style of protest."

Rajaram Bhat, the president of Nagarika Kriya Samiti said "The drivers and conductors in private buses get less salaries than the staff in government buses. But they charge more fare. They do not have the same fare for a specified distance, It is sad to see the staff of private buses treating the passengers like animals."

Kurnadu panchayat president Devdas Bhandary, the president of Kurnadu Shakthi Kendra Naveen Padalpady, BJP leader Azgar Ali, JD(S) leader Moideen Siraj, and Abdul Rahiman among others were present during the protest.

The bandh was successful with the bus operators stopping their services without any resistance. The shops were however open. Ambulance services were not affected.

The protest is very much timely and justifiable.

Bus fares and auto fares should be cut down drastically in light of the reduction of retail prices of petroleum products.

The big culprits are riksha drivers, they rip off the customers.

Passenger transport is a public utility as same as electricity, water supply, Railways etc., but the lust of our leaders still retained this in the clutches of the private owners. Public transport system should be a service motive and not a profit motive service. In Karnataka 85% of our districts running KSRTC buses but our DK & Udupi are in the clutches of private owners. Just for eye wash government is running some KSRTC buses at remote areas where the collection is very dull and allowed the profitable routes for private owners.District administrations of both DK & Udupi should permit KSRTC to start services in all routes especily in Mangalore- Udupi_Manipal so that the public in twin districts will avail several benefits to the commuters. In case of accident private owners never give any compensation even for the funeral of the victim and suggest them to fight in the court for Insurance compensation for several years.

I do fully agree with the view of Rajaram Bhat, the president of Nagarika Kriya Samiti that drivers and conductors are paid lesser salaries as compared to the staff in government buses in spite of charging high fare on their esteemed passengers.Besides there is no justification, logic used while fixing the fare. The fares are fixed according to the whims and fancy of the bus owners and according to their own will and wish, which cannot be questioned/argued by the public.Bus owner's association has only got right to decide or fix the fare regardless of the distance. They are behaving, acting as if they are the kings and nobody can question them not even RTO.Thus RTO has become puppet of bus owners and government is a mute spectator.Holding bus bandh as a symbolic protest is not the solution, the protest should be intensified and government buses are to be allowed to operate,as a competitor to bus owner's mafia and should be taught a good lesson.By the by drivers, conductors rude behaviours, attitudes also to be improved so as to suit the taste of public.
