Mangaluru: Charmadi Ghat gridlock - DC, SP, jump into action

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 4: In view of problems envisaged in ensuring smooth traffic on Charmadi Ghat road subsequent of closure of Shiradi Ghat stretch of national highway 75, movement of heavy vehicles with ten or more wheels stands banned on Charmadi Ghat road in view of the fact that the road is narrow and steep with several hairpin bends.

On Saturday, people were seen arguing with police personnel over getting held up for several hours. A protest was also held for a short stint by disgruntled people who squatted on the road. General opinion of the vehicles diverted to this route is that the government had not taken any precautionary measures to improve the road conditions here before diverting traffic meant to Bengaluru on this road.

Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim, said that efforts to ease the traffic on Charmadi Ghat Road are being made under the leadership of district superintendent of police, Dr S D Sharanappa. 'After the traffic was thrown out of gear from 8 pm to 1 am on Saturday, vehicles were stopped on both ends, and were allowed to move one by one. I am also in contact with the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Chikmagalur district,' he said.

He however, expressed satisfaction at the traffic conditions on Mani-Mysuru Road where there is no traffic problem. He also said that the district is facing major problem, although Chikmagalur and Hassan district are also involved with the work of streamlining traffic. Therefore, it has been decided to take the help of home guards,' he explained.

District superintendent of police, Dr S D Sharanappa, expressed resentment at the fact that no repair work was undertaken on the road, although the department concerned was informed sufficiently in advance about the need to prepare the road for heavier traffic. He noted that at many places on this road, difference between the road edge and sides happens to be one to one and a half feet, making it impossible for vehicles to swerve to the side to make room for oncoming vehicles. He noted that two ministers, Abhay Chandra Jain, and U T Khadar, were stranded on this road due to the block on Saturday for over three hours.

Sharanappa spent about eight hours on this road and walked for about eight km on Saturday in an effort to control the traffic and understand the problem.

Khadar said he had taken up with the PWD, which was found lagging in the matter of levelling the road and conducting other repair works, to address the problems. He said he had also instructed Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner suitably.

There is an immediate need for the concerned to arrange for providing water, food, medical, and toilet facilities to the stranded passengers on the ghat road.

I travelled on Saturday 3rd from Mangalore to Bangalore via Mani-Puttur-Sullia-Madikeri route. Though there was no traffic jam, the road at few pockets is horrible. It looks as if there is no asphalt at all. Many places the road widening work is going on. It took 9 hours to reach Bangalore. May be this could have been avoided if the concerned administration had taken action on time.

closure of Shiradi Ghat was Long before planned and I cant understand why the traffic plan is not under control. It is understood that heavy traffic must have stoped somedays before, before a big chaos beginns. In India sadly planning is not in.Thats why chaos. For that other People have to suffer.Should catch hold of planning engineers and traffic Police.

This proves that our officers do not have enough knowledge and experience to handle such situations. every work is NAM KE WASTE and taken for granted.. No accountability.. Not only this area, look at the record maintenance at taluk and revenue offices. Still they are following the Aryan / Dravida system of registers. Particularly the land tribunal offices at taluk levels. Most of the pages in the registers are torn out and not readable.. and the staff make the public to run from pillar to pillar. The poor/inexperienced managers do not know how to compile the data on computer systems. More over most of the staff recruited are from the reserved categories. Only GOD has to save our records/system at the offices.

Guys, Blame ourselves. Not the government, nor the MP/MLAs.
Follow the lane discipline, be patient. Then there will be no road blocks.

Gridlock is always caused by the owners of Cars and Two wheelers who jump the queue and take their vehicles forward from the right-side of other vehicles waiting in the Queue at Left side of the road as if the traffic rules are not applicable to Cars and Two wheelers. Due to this the vehicles coming from other direction have no space to move forward as the Right side of the road is also blocked by these Cars & Two wheelers who have jumped the queue. This causes gridlock.
Hence the the car owners and Two wheelers who jump the Que and cause gridlock by taking their vehicle from Right side, should be fined heavily and also their vehicle should be confiscated for at least one day.

Utter irresponsible and nonsense from the District admin of Mangalore and Chickmagalur pertaining alternative route for shiradi to charmadi ghat to Bangalore.SOME ONE WRITTEN IN THIS PORTAL YESTERDAY THAT EVERY THING OK IN CHARMADI GHAT AND CHARMADI HASANABBA WILL TAKE CARE OF SMOOTH SAILING OF VEHICLES!!!

Before making diversion to charmadi Ghat,no road repair has done, road is not widened not enough primary arrangements are done.BC road to Mudgere which charmadi even though d NH,nothing substantial has done to upgrade the road.GURUVAYANAKERE-BELTHANGADY-UJIRE road is too congested to Charmadi diversion and I think that stretch need police personnel to control the flow of the vehicle.
