Indian jailed in Dubai for graft

Dubai, Jan 8 (IANS): An Indian has been jailed here for three years for offering a Dh10,000 ($2,722) bribe to an employee of the UAE's Directorate General of Naturalisation and Foreigners Affairs (GDNFA) to clear his papers, a media report said Thursday.

The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance Wednesday sentenced the 43-year-old Indian man identified only by his initial as A.N.N., Khaleej Times reported.

The court has also ordered his deportation after serving the jail term.

In May last year, the man submitted applications to the GDNFA officer to finalise dealings for a company in which he works.

In the process, he offered the officer Dh10,000 as bribe to get family visas issued, fix a residence visa for an illegal immigrant who had over stayed for 356 days accumulating fine of Dh7,980.

The officer informed the preventive security department about the offer. The department asked the officer to go along with the man. The officer thus accepted his offer and received the applications from the Indian man.

After agreement with the preventive security department, the officer issued visas and other documents to the man. Police caught the man while he was giving the bribe.
