Udupi, Dec 18: Gopal Kharvi, a fisherman known for his record setting adventures in the sea, created a new first on Sunday December 17 when he swam 10 kilometres from St Mary’s Island to Malpe beach here, with his hands and feet handcuffed.

Kharvi embarked on his adventure at 6.55 am on December 17 and reached the destination at 9.05 am, taking 2 hours 10 minutes in all to cover the distance. He was welcomed with a hearty applause by a large number of admirers and supporters.

Earlier in 2004, Kharvi had set a record by swimming a distance of 80 kilometres from Hangarakatte to Malpe here in just 11 hours and 50 minutes.

Brahmavar MLA K Jayaprakash Hegde who was present on the occasion garlanded Kharvi and promised to do his best to get Kharvi’s name in the Limca Book of India Records.
