Mangaluru, Jan 11: 'Spectrum 2015′, a conference on cardiology organized by AJ Institute of Medical Sciences and AJ Hospital and Research Centre was held on Saturday, January 10 at Hotel Ocean Pearl here.

Based on the theme 'Cardiovascular therapies and research update', the symposium focused on both interventional and non-interventional cardiology.

During the inaugural function, Dr B V Manjunath, organizing chairman, welcomed the gathering.

Chief guest, A J Shetty, president of Laxmi Memorial Education Trust, Dr M Shantharam Shetty, Pro Chancellor, Nitte University along with other dignitaries on the dais inaugurated the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp.

Addressing the gathering Dr M Shantharam Shetty said, "Mangaluru is unique. In terms of number of medical colleges, Mangaluru stands second in the world with five colleges, next only to Boston which has six. Mangaluru has more banks, engineering colleges, and most of the film actors are born here. We are not behind in the field of sports either. We are proud of that."

He further said, "Fifteen million people in the world die due to cardio-related diseases. Most of the diseases could be prevented by taking precautions. We lack the zeal towards research, we give excuses saying 'no infrastructure'. Most of the early scientists did not even have the facility we have today, but they overcame obstacles.

"The most important thing is to follow the treatment of great ethics and values. Medicine is not science but an art. Let us all strive towards making this country a great place to live in," he said.

A J Shetty expressed his gratitude to the organizers and the delegates for conducting such a unique and important event and also requested the gathering to make use of the conference in their professional lives.

The programme included panel discussions, lectures, interactive sessions, debates and ECG quiz.

The programme was attended by over 200 delegates consisting of cardiologists, physicians, post-graduates of cardiology and medicine all over Karnataka.

Dr R Purushotham, organizing secretary, proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Jawahar was also present at the occasion.

Many people are sleeping at the lecture. Worse is the woman in front row sitting next to a bag. Unfortunately these postgraduate facilities are only available to young doctors whose parents or in laws can pay over 2 crores for a post graduate seat. But real intelligent doctors from poor back ground do not get a chance.
