Beltangady: Man killed on spot as speeding bus hits bike near Ujire

Beltangady, Jan 11: A man was killed on the spot after a speeding KSRTC bus rammed into his bike here on Monday January 12.

The deceased has been identified as Vasu (30), a resident of Navoor.

The accident occured at TB Cross near Ujire Halepete.

It is said that a KSRTC bus plying from State Bank, Mangaluru to Dharmasthala smashed into Vasu's bike when he was riding from Ujire towards Beltangady town.

Police sources said that rash driving and speeding by the bus driver caused the accident. The bus driver has been taken into custody.

Vasu was a driver by profession.

A case has been registered in Beltangady police station.

    Defensive driving is based on three ideas: visibility, space and communication.

    Visibility is about seeing and being seen. You should always be aware of traffic in front, behind and beside you. Keep your eyes constantly moving, scanning the road ahead and to the side and checking your mirrors every five seconds or so. The farther ahead you look, the less likely you will be surprised, and you will have time to avoid any hazards. Make sure other drivers can see you by using your signal lights as required.

    Managing the space around your vehicle lets you see and be seen and gives you time and space to avoid a collision. Leave a cushion of space ahead, behind and to both sides. Because the greatest risk of a collision is in front of you, stay well back.

    Communicate with other road users to make sure they see you and know what you are doing. Make eye contact with pedestrians, cyclists and drivers at intersections and signal whenever you want to slow down, stop, turn or change lanes. If you need to get another person’s attention, use your horn.

    As I earlier said,UJIRE-BELTHANGAY-GURUVANAKERE road has high prequency of vehicles that with out four or two lanes such accidents can't be controlled.This road comes under NH .From BC road to Mudigere and beyond via Charmady Ghat.Closure of Shiradi ghat added density of vehicles in this stretch so such accidents are imminent in future.Even though BC road-Mudugere via Charmadi road d NH long back the condition of road is very pathetic requires urgent widening @ least.May soul rest in peace.

    I pray his soul rest in peace. Please do not blame the private buses. Private bus drivers are maintaining time perfectly rather than KSRTC. Do you remember 15 years back story of Mangalore - Puttur root?. Frequency of bus service was 45 minutes to one hour. Passengers had been waiting one hour to catch the bus. Recent years private contract carriage buses were introduced. After the introduction of contract carriage buses finally KSRTC wake up and improved their service. Taxy car and van drivers had been looting the passengers at that time. Around 10 to 12 people accommodated in Ambassador car. Ambassador car was picking the passengers near Syndicate Bank in Hampankatta. I remember a car driver was pushing the passengers inside the car and saying that " Anne seatedu kullad bokka Akker annana jekkeludu kullad"

    Road accidents seem to be daily occurrences. It is time that strict rules are imposed on bus drivers and save lives.

    Why do only most KSRTC buses hit the news these days? Perhaps the very design of the slipshod Karnataka Sarige buses contribute to these fatal accidents.
    Unlike Volvo or most other private express buses, these buses are crammed with a cabin that includes a bulky windshield frame, cramped windows and bungled driver seats. These are nothing but the contributing factors to these drivers negligence and recklessness.
    Being paid preposterously low wages combined with the pressure to be prompt while acquiring inadequate rest, these drivers are sure to find themselves on a collision course.
