Mangaluru: KPT students protest against hostel warden over alleged assault

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Jan 17: Students of Karnataka Polytechnic (KPT) on Saturday January 17 rose in protest demanding the resignation of the KPT hostel warden, alleging that he had beaten up and abused four students for coming late to the hostel.

The students alleged that Mohan Raj, the student welfare officer and hostel warden, beat up four hostel inmates and also abused them.

Following the allegations and the protest, the warden resigned from his post, even though he maintained that he had not hit or abused anybody.

Speaking to daijiworld, Manoj, one of the students who was allegedly abused, narrated the incident and said, "Four students - Kasim, Shreeshai, Tejas and I - had been to do catering work on January 14 evening, as we are financially poor and have to support ourselves with jobs. By the time we returned it was 11.30 pm, so the warden did not allow us in and made us sleep in the verandah. He also abused us and beat us up with wires."

He further alleged, "The warden is too strict and always imposing fines."

Principal of the college Karunakara Rai speaking to daijiworld said, "The matter has been resolved now. There is pressure from parents to impose discipline. Some students go out after 6.30 pm which is the deadline, and come late in the night. Some of them even consume alcohol, so to maintain discipline we have imposed strict rules. As far as this issue is concerned, we have already rectified the situation and arrived at a compromise. The issue will be brought to the notice of the KPT director.

"We have installed CCTVs cameras in the hostel to monitor the activities of the students," he added.

He also informed that the warden will resign, adding, "No one comes forward to take the warden's job as it is very difficult to control the students. When they are indisciplined, rules have to be implemented strictly."

Speaking to daijiworld, Mohan Raj denied the allegdations and said, "I did not hit or abuse anybody. But I will still resign from my post."

During 60's & 70's KPT used to be branded as Poli Technique for most of the vandalism and nuisance the students of KPT were well known for. Second Government College.

There no problem in lecturers warning or scolding the students but here the lecturer has beaten up the students. There would have been no issue if he had not beaten them. All the students are not gone crazy to go on strike without any reason.

This issue should be discussed and find a solution with in the organization. I advise the students to choose a right path always and wasting time in silly things never help you people in future.

There's no problem in lecturers warning the students, but in this case the wardon has beaten the students. There would have been no issue if he had warned and left the students but he has beaten them and has used such bad words that we cant imagine a lecturer can say that.

There is nothing wrong in warden on teacher giving students one or two slap or kicks for their wrong doing . Ultimately they are responsible if something wrong happens to the students on the streets during late nights.

    Jossey,

If students were working after school to support themselves financially, then warden is wrong in beating and abusing them...

If they went out for fun after school then I think warden is right here in disciplining them...

Mohan Raj Sir, you are right'cause if something happens to either of these four students outside the campus after 6.30 pm the parents will surely hold you responsible. I remember around 2 months back one eighth standard girl escaped from Sharada Residential School campus and ran away and found in Mumbai but before she was traced her parents along with many others threatened the warden of the school, so you need not resign, have done a good job, you are appreciated.

The kids should be grateful to the warden who is like a father figure to the kids, it’s about taking responsibility for your own future kids. Because when you go looking for a job you will be requiring three things in life, talent, luck and discipline. The most important is DISCIPLINE...
