Mangaluru: Sale of syrup with intoxicating substance - Medical shop owner held

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 18: The owner of a medical here was arrested by Suratkal police on Saturday January 17 on the allegation of selling cough syrup containing intoxicants without seeking production of prescription from a registered medical practitioner.

The arrested person has been identified as Edwin Monteiro (40), who owns and operates Ave Maria Medicals at Suratkal. It is said that he had sold syrup containing intoxicating substance to Mohammed Shahid (23) from Chokkabettu, and Nizamuddin (21) from Katipalla without any medical prescription.

Monteiro was taken into custody when both these youth, who bought the syrup from the medical shop, were consuming them on the spot.

It is said that the syrup contains Codeine Phosphate in considerable quantities, and that this substance can be sold and used only for medical purposes and not as an intoxicant. Consumption of this substance in higher doses can inflict fatal damage to the body of the person as the level of intoxication exceeds prescribed limit.

In the past, local MLA, B A Mohiuddin Bava, had informed the city police commissioner that there has been widespread habit of consuming cough syrup containing intoxicating substance in Suratkal, and asked him to investigate the issue. Following this, Suratkal police had kept constant vigil, and succeeded in making the arrest.

The arrested accused was produced in court, after which he was remanded to judicial custody till January 31. Panambur assistant commissioner of police, Ravikumar, said that he has information about widespread prevalence of such a practice in and around Suratkal, and has warned that an investigation team is being formed to stop the practice of selling medicines as an alternative to intoxicants.

    dear daiji readers....

i could not control my disgust after reading the news.

for 10 years i know this pharmacist & pharmacy.... really unfortunate to send him for judicial custody. god will never gorgive police/legal system....

    - rasheed malbari was given with bail & absconding.
    - sakshi maharaj is freely roaming.
    - no drug trafficking person was arrested in city.
    - kabir of surathkal was given big compensation by government.
    - kalladka was never arrested.

poor pharmacist was arrested for selling one cough syrup ( remember this is not ararely used cough syrup & nothing happens even of you drink full bottle)

why the youth was not arrested for consuming the syrup without prescription?

something is fishy. unnecessarily the pharmacist is victimized.( kanada kaigalu kelasa madive, 100%)

even rasheed malbari or the arrested persons in deralakatte rape case also might not be arrested in this way.

our legal system can not differentiate between rasheed malbari & pharmacist.

@Stan Dubai, there is nothingagainst the Pharma industry.Acough syrup can be sold with priscription.Problem is in India when you buy a medicine ,you get back the priscription. That should be banned. For every new medication buy a new priscription should be brought. Some drug edict People go and buy with same Rezept someother medical shop and enjoy.codiene should not be given for more than two or three days. Then they become addicts.some know it .doctors also indicate about the Action of htis drug to the Patient. Here we can buy this medicine without doctors Rezept, but they tell about it.(Self pay)where as other medicine is with Rezept from sick insurance paid.In india how many People know about effect of hair spray?many addicts inhale it with in a large number spraying.

It IS SO UNFORTUNATE that an innocent medical shop owner has been trapped in a carefully laid out trap. The two youths coincidentally belong to the same community as well as the MLA . Huge crimes and fraudsters get tipped off of an impending raid and escape punishment. There was no such tip for this man.It is indeed sickening to see the games people play.

it is interesting to see victor commenting on communal issue,i haven't had any intention of communal this issue, but anyone in surathkal knows ave maria medical owner,he was doing business in same shop from last 20 years or so.When every gun now points towards hardcore drug issue,to divert minds of people and public this stunt was carried out.Why police not arrested these youths who brought medicine to use it as drug.Poor man never intended to go to doctors they want quick relief and sometimes they directly came to medical shop for advice and medicine,All medical stores never follow rules,So when commenting bear in mind of actual facts and findings.

I personally think this was a well planned trap laid to put this chemist shop owner in trouble for diverting attention of the 'gullible' public from the main issue of sale of 'hard core' drug issue!!!

It is indeed surprising that absolutely public does not get any news of catches of 'hard core' drug suppliers getting caught when this place and surrounding areas are notorious for the same since ages, and 'innocent' people are trapped for small misdeeds!!

Today, majority of the poor people go directly to chemists before going to docs, and narrate their problems/symptoms, and the chemist immediately doles out medications without blinking an eyelid!!

I empathize with this guy who has been trapped with meticulous planning and made the 'sacrificial lamb' for whatever reasons!!! Jai Hind!!

Linctus codeine has been stopped for OTC supply since 2 years now, It is not possible to get it in Pharma without Prescription. There is a Corex brand which contains Chorpheniramine Maleate. It is different. What this Monteiro has sold is not illegal, it is the way that it was sold that is Illegal.

Codeine is also used for pain relief and is prescribed in much larger doses for pain than in cough syrup. I do not see any reason why this Pharmacist should be arrested and sent to custody. May be the MLA involved in this has some personal interest.

Hardly you can find anyone who has not gone adventurous on 'kicks' during college time.
Its no big deal, it will pass.

Valium dissolved in soda water was common. Codeine in cough syrup followed by a strong coffee, codein puts you to sleep, while caffeine jolts you up.. both effects together on you, you float.
Of course, on or two puffs of weed with friends.. heavenly.

Its nostalgic to look back 30-35 years.
