Bengaluru: 15 women fall into drain as wall gives way during religious procession

Updated

Bengaluru, Jan 21 (DHNS): More than 15 women fell into a stormwater drain and sustained minor injuries when the compound wall of a private school collapsed in Mahadeshwaranagar, off Magadi Road, under Tavarekere police limits, on Tuesday.

The incident occurred when around 108 women, who had gathered near the school to carry a ‘Kalasha’ for a local temple festival, rushed to collect their ‘Kalasha’, which were placed near the wall. This caused a minor stampede and women who lost balance, leaned against the wall.

The wall, unable to withstand the pressure, collapsed into the five-foot drain. Around 15 women who were leaning against the wall also fell into the drain.

The public and other devotees pulled the women out of the drain. They informed the police and shifted the injured to a private hospital, said the police.

The wall was constructed with hollow bricks and was damp due to a drain situated next to it, a senior police officer said.

The women are being treated at a nearby private hospital.

“No one has come forward to register a complaint. The issue is being discussed with the other senior police officers and if needed a suo motu case will be registered,” the officer said.

No doubt this accident occurred due to access pressure on the hollow block wall but there is simple civil engineering missing ie a reinforced barrier in-between. This is a must when one side of the compound wall is very deep and the damage would have been less if there was a structure as said above. To save few rupees, at the risk of so human lives? Or is it lack of knowledge? Concerned Department should take action and let public know about the fault so that in future such incidents can be avoided.

Very sad to hear about the incident. There is no safety measures taken by the authorities before permitting the school license. There is no safety whatsoever as long as this corrupt politicians run our country. The culprits are allowed free to roam on bail, while if we see some of the foreign countries imposing strict punishments for the wrong doers. In India everyone knows that whatever wrong happens, the money will come to their rescue. Bribe & corruption is what our politics is filled with. As long this politicians keep sucking the blood of the poor civilians, nothing is going to happen about India. It doesn't matter we launch any satellite into space or we buy new arms from the foreign countries, as long as the citizens suffer what is the point in showing the world that we are developing. Good save India.
