Mangaluru, Jan 27: The Fedaration of Karnataka Auto Rickshaw Drivers' Union under the banner of CITU on Tuesday January 27 organized a protest demanding a review of the auto rickshaw fares that were recently reduced by the deputy commissioner.

As per the order issued by DC A B Ibrahim earlier this month, the minimum auto fare was reduced to Rs 20 from Rs 25. Though the new prices were supposed to come into effect from January 12, auto drivers have refused to follow the order and have been charging Rs 25 as before. A meeting convened by the DC to discuss the issue also yielded no positive result.

Addressing the protest held in front of the DC's office on Tuesday, Balakrishna Shetty, district president of CITU, said, "Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner suddenly reduced the auto rickshaw fare from Rs 25 to Rs 20. It is not correct. Auto drivers serve the people for more than 14 hours a day and the public should realize and acknowledge the hard work put in by the auto drivers.

"Even to this day no government has formed a welfare commission for auto drivers. They have no social security. Though the rickshaw drivers help people in their hard times and save lives, there is no protection for auto driver's life," he added.

"Though prices of petroleum products have reduced, those of day-to-day commodities have not. Spare parts of auto rickshaws are priced high. Hence the deputy commissioner should review the reduced auto rickshaw fare," he urged.

L T Suvarna warned of intensifying the protest in the coming day if the demands of auto drivers are not met.

On this occasion Sunil Kumar Bajjal, Krishnappa Gowda and others were present.

An auto rickshaw drivers' association has called for a strike from midnight of January 27 to midnight of Wednesday January 28.

Bhavya, I agree with you to some extent. The main thing is the fuel cost. That has come down by nearly half!Let the passengers also get the benefit to a certain extent! There are lot of families like your fathers with three female children in different jobs in lower class and middle class.Let them also get the benefit of fuel price reduction! Hope my thinking is not wrong. U also think again in a unbiased way!

I don’t understand why these honorable daijiworld readers are rude towards Mangalore auto drivers . Compare to Mysore they are far better. If you want, come and experience in Mysore.
After all after serving sincerely (except a few) they are earning their livelihood. Let us take a driver gets ten trips per day (average) he will earn total Rs. 200 per day. Out of that he has to pay for petrol or gas, for loan, for the maintenance and remaining balance amount for him and his family. Suppose Rs. 100/- he spend for the petrol and other things , he is left with only Rs. 100/- per day. From this amount only, he has to manage himself and his family. Now a day Rs. 20 is nothing, even beggars won’t go unless we pay 10 rupees. Therefore let us not too harsh towards rickshaw drivers. They too are human beings, they too want to lead a respectable life in society by sincere earning. No body talks about masons, carpenters etc. Just few years back daily wage of mason and carpenter was Rs 200 & today it is Rs. 700/ . No body talks about that. We are ready to pay any amount as wages after supplying the materials. But here we are not giving any material for our two kilometers journey and we become very much stingy to pay to the rickshaw man.
My suggestion to Govt. is Government has to fix drivers wages per day. Say rupees 500 and over that petrol or gas charge and maintenance and loan installments etc.
So any trip, let there be a fixed Rs. 50/- per trip towards drivers wages and above whatever are meter charges for petrol and other things.

It is ridiculous to stage protest over reduced fares and demand review. But why for? When the petrol price is increased, they are on their toes to increase and when the price is decreased they are reluctant. What is their logic?Besides they are very arrogant in nature while negotiating fare with the passengers apart from being charged exorbitant fare. When the meter is set after considering all their expenses, how come they ask for extra money than the meter reading for going inside of the main road.Is there any logic? If we don't pay what they demand,it is the high time to listen abusive/filthy languages from the drivers as if we are all animals.I suggest to fix minimum charge of Rs 15 instead of Rs 20/=.They are not helping the public but they are looting the public and gullible people. They are working for their own benefit not in the interest of public.

Every one's target is auto drivers. Though some of them are rude and misbehave there are good auto drivers too. Oil price reduction does not apply only for auto drivers. These people have no lobby. How much fare is reduced by private & Govt buses . What is done is only the eyewash. Please look at other side. These drivers are un-organised workers like daily wage earners without any social welfare, medical facility or retirement benefits. If they are not able to work for a day there is no income fore them. I feel they should be allowed to with present fare.

Tomorrow if the oil price increase by chance again they will go for dharna to increase the fare. Do you think public are the milking cows to take care of their welfare
Secondly, even now owner of the rickshaw may be receiving 200rs max. by end of the day with that he has to clear loan, pay taxes take care of maintenance etc etc for this driver will not made responsible. In spite drivers are making money and rule the public. For their welfare let them approach govt not the public made responsible.

Auto service is not unique to Mangalore -every town has its own fare structure. In Delhi, the CNG autos have a different, lower fare. The banks financing the autos also have a basis for calculation of viability, earnings, expenses, income, and repaying capacity. It does not change according to the location. Let the D C and RTO compare the fare structure in other similar centres and call the agitating auto men. If they can convince the authorities, they win Else, the strike will have to be withdrawn unconditionally.

Very rude behaviour by autowallahs....When the govt. Has taken steps to reduce the rate of fuel.... Definitely the rickshaw fare should come down to help common man..

They work for 14 hours not for free....night time changed rate... Morning rate.... Railway and bus stop rates.... These are all varied by autos due to which the common man suffers....they fight... Insult and take the money....
As for risk to their lives....vthe way they drive between Udupi is testament that rhey risk the lives of everyone around the road....DC should bring strict rules for the same....

My only 1 question who as answered all the comments. " Why Bus fare not reduced even after the reduce in fuel price. " Is that not looting the Public. Even Auto drivers are serving the Public, here everyone are just commenting only bad about the Auto drivers. cant u remember at least few good things they do to the general public. Before commenting think from the point of auto owners as well as the drivers.

How can they DARE not follow the diktats of the DC and RTA, which shows how bold they are!! This would happen only in a place of docile beings, because most the drivers are very rude and abusive, and the passengers fearing harsh words and curses fall to their demands!!

They have all the tricks of the trade up their sleeves they dictate terms on where they will go and where not, arbitrary charging of 1.5x fare to a destination which is not in favor of them, charging extra for going a few meters inside from the main roads citing frivolous reasons!! Traveling in auto in Mangluru is a nightmare most of the times!!

It is high time these guys are brought to their senses and counseled on how to behave with passengers before granting of driving licences!!

Compared to a big metro like Mumbai such type of fares and attitudes of the drivers, this is too much for a small city like Mangluru!!

"Rickshaw drivers' association has called for a strike from midnight of January 27 to midnight of Wednesday January 28."

The public should stage a counter protest and bandh to reduce the fare from Rs. 25 to Rs. 18, at least. Then they will shut the mouth.

It Is Not Necessary To Make Minimum Charge 20 Rupees For Auto Drivers. Passengers Are Paying As They Ask Without Reading Or Running The Meter.1.5 Is Their Minimum Charge. Even I Paid More Than Actual Reading In Meter In Tagore Park Area From RTO.

Problem here is most of the rich NRIs use autos and for them a few bucks here and there does not make any dent whereas for the common man who by chance has to take and auto for some emergency or urgent work it is big money, hence they have got habituated with goonda type attitude whereas they would have dare not do it in a city like Mumbai where the public is always assertive and fights for its rights !! Jai Hind!!
