Udupi: Tanker kills pedestrian at Santhekatte

Udupi, Jan 31: A pedestrian died on the spot after a gas tanker rammed into him at Santhekatte here on Saturday January 31.

The deceased has been identified as Umesh (43), a resident of Nejar.

It is said that the tanker was plying from Mangaluru to a petrol bunk in Udupi. It had to take a u-turn at Santhekatte in order to reach the petrol bunk.

When it was taking the u-turn a little ahead of Santhekatte junction, it hit Umesh who was crossing the road, killing him on the spot.

As per the complaint filed by Umesh's relative Janardhana Poojary, the tanker was moving at a high speed and being driven rashly.

The body was shifted to Ajjarkad hospital.

Umesh was an employee in the local court where his job was to send out summons as per court orders.

Udupi traffic police have registered a case.

    Another instance of poor road planning. Udupi and DK and even UK for that matter all have high population density along the national highway. Why pedestrian bridge or pedestrian subway is not built at all major intersections? Santhekatte is a good example. There are at least 25 similar intersections from Mangalore to Kundapur highway. Why pedestrian's interests are not taken into account during planning? Same story when building city roads. One will rarely find a good pedestrian side walk or footpath.

    Santhekatte junction urgently need cross over bridge to highway with speed breakers(humps) to both side of the highway. Crossing the highway is big achievement here. Hope elected representatives take this matter seriously. My sincere condolences to the deceased family.

    Again the bottom line is there is lawlessness on the road - might is right!
    The larger vehicles move as they please and so do most other vehicles.
    The population (number) of vehicles on the road is way too high and the system is too flexible. People on foot have no space and their rights are not respected. Their space is encroached by the mighty! So, even Almighty can do but little. Who is to understand? Those in power have better things to do! Thanks

    Dear All,
    No one knows when and were the end. Every one should prepare and be ready with good deeds is the main responsibility of every mankind. For safety measure, such heavy GAS/PATROL tankers hazardous vehicles should not permit to enter city/residential area and it is illegal. All should stand together and take action against authority.

    In India nobody follow rules and regulations on the road,so are gas ,Petrol tankers.Best is such Petrol Bunks should be out of main City centres,so that any big accidents either tank collision or pedestrians coming under the vehicles can be avoided.so Long tankers drive slowly as per rules.May his Soul rest in peace.It is not only tankers,but pedestrians also are not always following the road rules.Heartfelt sympathy to the Family.

    How a tanker at u turn was with high speed.It might be pedestrians mistake not to check properly on either sides before crossing. May his soul rest in peace.Such deaths are unfortunate and painful to the family

    Just request for speed road work. no need of new request now. Do you know the Santhekatte junction. Vehicle coming from Brahmavar changing the lane towards Malpe and from Udupi side to Kalianpur/Nejar. If you cross this junction means a big achievement. Last month I had to cross this junction 4 times a day for 20 days to my son to school UUFFFFF.

    Who knows when God Summons and how he summons.
    The Tanker Owner should be made to pay heavy compensation to the family of deceased immediately as the procedure of 3rd party insurance claim through Court takes decades and that amount may be small.
