Karkala: Failure to follow adoption procedure - Baby taken away from couple

Karkala, Feb 2: A one-and-a-half-month-old baby girl was on Monday February 2 taken away from a couple who had reportedly wanted to adopt her but failed to follow procedures.

Gopinath Bhat, a priest at Ganapathy Temple in Karkala and his wife Revathi, who stay in a house behind the temple, had been looking after the baby girl.

It is learnt that the baby was procured from Hubballi through an acquantaince of Revathi's sister who stays there.

The couple however, did not go through legal adoption procedures, and this came to the notice of the child labour department of Udupi.

Prabhakar Acharya, director of Udupi district child labour programme, along with Sitaratna of Karkala women and child welfare department, police officials and others raided the couple's house and took custody of the baby.

When questioned about the baby, the couple failed to give convincing answers and hence, Gopinath and Revathi along with the baby were taken to Krishna Anugraha child adoption centre at Santhekatte. The baby was handed over to the adoption centre.

Gopinath and Revathi were sent back home, and it is learnt that they would be interrogated further on Tuesday February 3.

    Hi there, I wanna adopt a baby, infact an infact which is one o two month old. My native is Udupi. I can come down for all the legal procedures and so on. but i have no idea where we can find such babies and what are the actual procedures. Pls somebody guide...

    i adopted the baby it is lot of hassle go delhi go here and there and i was asked 3 lakh and i given
    lot of people cannot offer
    one has to change the law

    Adoption process is too much complicated in India and should be reviewed and should be made easy.We can not blame authorities as they have to follow their procedures.

    Lot many people in villages, who are childless and who want to adopt kids, are unsure of all the formalities! They should have approached some NGO or human rights guys for proper procedure!..

    It is quite sad that, when one comes forward to adopt a baby girl, lot many chochle by these govt officials. they make sure, the kid is back in some adoption center, and that gets money to raise it up!.. I am not doubting the intention of the couple, however, they dont know the proper procedure and dont know the after effects of owning a baby, just like that! it is not like vegetable market and tomorro god forbid, if there is a marital discord, who will own the kid, whose custody it will go...! There are lot of legal hassles.. that is why even a SINGLE FATHER is not allowed to adopt a kid, unlike a single mother like sushmita sen!... proper guidance should be given by NGOs for the couple! I hope they get help from local MLA Sunil Kumar in this case!

    It is true in this case that the required formalities are not followed but somehow this could have been resolved easily by guiding the couple. The people are genuine here and certainly they wanted a child for adoption. Why make it a issue which could have been regularized by the women and child welfare center? Am sure there is no foul play in this.

    I saw most of you question why baby is taken back, they could have taken care etc etc. But keep in mind about one statement there "as they could not provide solid justification". Then of course law will come in between. They could not justify because, either it could be a stolen baby from Hubli or it could be a part of the racket...anything. So, let the legal verification completes and if its found the baby is really a orphan or parents of the baby themselves have agreed for the adoption, then yes, Gopinath Bhat and Revathi could be the best parents of the baby. Till then let there be a pause and better place for baby is adoption center.

    For those of you who think that the authorities did wrong, please tell me - from where the couple will get the birth certificate for the child ? How will they enroll it into any education center or how will the child upon growing up avail vital documents like Ration Card, Adhaar, Passport ?

    It is very important to know that legalization of records must be set straight, may it be any person, property or an asset. Tomorrow anybody can have our child/land/car with him hand and say it is his - what can we do ?

    I am sure Bhut couple will succeed in completing the documentation and have the child back with them. My good wishes are with them.

    Ma'm,
    Karkala is too in India. You are doubtful of obtaining a birth certificate??

    The authorities can interrogate and investigate the couple without snatching away the child. If found innocent, they can always educate the couple of the procedures and guide them to have the baby legally.
    What is is shown here is utter display of arrogance that comes with government ranks!

    In India (exactly) one cannot say my neighbours died, I am adopting their children as I am childless because an abandoned child is a government property and is looked after through taxpayers' money.

    An orphaned child needs to go through government listing, examined and put on available list of adoption. There are couples on queue for adoption who will be priority. The Bhatts will get their turn when theirs will be due. This a normal procedure, but there are many back-door entry/exits because this is precisely INDIA.

    Nevertheless, I know a childless couple who booked themselves as a patient in a hospital where a college girl was giving birth out of wedlock. The child became theirs without any legal documentation. Got it ? The matter is hush hush because the child can be anytime confiscated if the mater comes to the knowledge of the authorities.

    Illegal shop or illegal house no one bothers.Depends rich people no one asks even if they adopt. This happens to poor or middle class people only. SAD part.

    I guess, to avoid future complications, like rights over property and other relationship matters, its important to observe law and clear at the beginning.

    If everything is okay, the Gopinath bhat family will be facilitated with the adoption.

    The action of Police and Child welfare dept seems to be inhuman.
    But frequently we read in news paper that many infants born in govt Hospitals in Hubbali & Belagavi have vanished and the police have been unable to trace the gang inspite of having CCTV in the Hospitals.

    very sad.sometimes some dont know even the formalities should be done before you adapt children.probably couple was happy to have a child .They must be very sad now.or I doubt someone intervened for Money ,?But let them not give up and apply for another child.There are many children waiting to have a happy home with Family .Let one of them have their dream come true.

    When the baby was well taken care of by these couple and when the biological parents have no problem, I don't understand what is the problem of above said child welfare associations. Instead of questioning the couple, they should have assisted the couple to legalise the adoption. My humble request to these associations is please take a lenient view on these type of cases.

    @ PINTO Doha,may be there was something not clear,since her sister from elsewhere looked out for a Baby .we dont know exactly how Baby came to them.sometimes the adaptive parents go many hard ways to get a Baby.even illegal.which doesn't mean this particular couple done it.still they shouldn't takeaway the Baby all of a sudden .It is shock to adaptive parents,but most important for the Baby ,it has to get oriented to a quite unknown Person,food Habits.why dont they think of it ?They say children welfare ,but it is quite opposite here.
