Mangalore, Jan 8: Work on the proposed Malavoor drinking water project will begin soon, according to former MLA and Village Water and Sanitation Committee (VWSC) president Vijay Kumar Shetty while addressing a press meet here on Sunday January 7.

A vented dam will be built across the river Gurpur at Joyikallu here as part of the project. The project, to be built under Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Supply Pilot Project will cost an estimated 18.19 crore, out of which the union government will release 11.55 crore, Shetty said.

As of now, the project has received only technical and administrative approval and tenders have been invited for the same. The union minister for rural development is expected to give his approval for the project soon. A meeting in this regard will be held with the union minister on January 10, he said.

The project, once completed, will provide drinking water to eleven villages.
