Puttur, Feb 5: After the occurrence of some undesirable incidents at Uppinangady in the recent past, police have beefed up security in the area. Night vigil also stands reinforced, as per police reports. However, a gang of thieves, undaunted by the reported increase in police presence, succeeded in entering two houses and taking away cash and ornaments worth over Rs 14 lacs on the intervening night between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The houses are located at Uppinangady Math at Upinangady. The thieves entered these houses by breaking their locks. Owner of one of these houses named Shambhavi Shetty had cultivated the practice of going to the house of a relative nearby for sleeping at night, as she had turned jittery since an accident relating to power connection occurred at her house recently that had inflicted heavy loss.

The thieves broke the lock of Shambhavi's front door, and took away 60 sovereigns of gold ornaments kept in an almirah besides Rs 25,000 in cash and silver valuables. The total items which were taken away in this incident has been calculated at Rs 13 lac.

The other house which was targetted by thieves belongs to a person named Himmath, who worked as a skilled goldsmith. He is from Uttar Pradesh, and had left for his hometown by locking his house. The thieves took away five sovereigns of gold ornaments worth about Rs 1 lac from his house.

It was found that the gang, after the two thefts, had tried to break open the lock of the gate of a house owned by Puttumonu nearby but failed.
