Bengaluru, Feb 6: Police sub-inspector of commercial street station in the city, Pradeep Poojary, has been suspended for allowing All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party of Hyderabad-based Asaduddin Owaisi to hold programme within the limits of his police station.

Legally, sub-inspectors or other junior police officials do not have the power to permit holding of such programmes. The organizers need to approach the deputy commissioners of police having jurisdiction over the place where the programme is proposed to be held, and obtain the official's permission.

Additional city police commissioner (law and order), Alok Kumar, said that the sub-inspector was kept under suspension with effect from Thursday for issuing the said permission letter in violation of law.

In the meanwhile, on behalf of the above party, a petition had been filed against the decision of the commercial street police inspector and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to decline its request to hold public meeting at Chota Maidan in Shivajinagar. Owaisi and someother leaders of his party were to take part in this meeting. The police department had withdrawn the permission earlier issued, citing security concerns. BBMP officials had also had refused permission for the same reason.

On Thursday, AIMIM headed by Asaduddin Owaisi withdrew its petition from the high court. It filed a memo stating that the meeting it had proposed to hold on February 8 would be cancelled, and the party will approach the competent authorities with request to permit public meeting at Shivajinagar on either February 21 or 22. The single judge bench headed by Justice Nazeer permitted the party to withdraw the case.
