Mangaluru, Feb 7: The court of the junior magistrate (first class) here has awarded a whopping compensation of Rs 15 lacs to a woman relating to case of harassment by husband.
The court has also ordered payment of monthly maintenance to the wife. The relief awarded is considered to be a record in a case where divorce has not been considered.
In this case, the wife had sought relief against atrocities and violence under Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005.
Judge of the court, Roopashree, after hearing both the sides, ruled that the husband will have to pay Rs 15 lacs to the wife towards mental torture and violence suffered by her at the hands of her husband.
The judge also ordered the husband to pay monthly maintenance to his wife, return her gold ornaments and other valuables, and not to resort to domestic violence henceforth.
Advocate M P Noronha had argued the case on bahalf of the petitioner.
