Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Feb 12: Louis Mendonca, a popular teacher, former principal of St Mary's Pre-University College, Shirva, passed away on Thursday, February 12.

More details awaited.

About Louis Mendonca:

Having joined the St Mary’s High School in 1949 as its headmaster, Louis Mendonca served for 32 years and during these years he saw the school develop into a college and retired as its principal. During his service he encouraged students to take part in sports and cultural activities and thus helped in the all-round development of their personality. He was the mentor, philosopher and guide to thousands of students who are now in high positions in the country and abroad. He was also instrumental in the development of the Shirva Manchakal area- supply of electricity, upgrading of the local hospital, eye check up and medical camps.

Born in Shirva, he worked for the eradication of leprosy in Shirva and after retirement he started the higher primary school in Belur which is now a high school and bagged the best school award. He served as the president of Medical Relief Association of Shirva, president- Lions Club, Udupi, Lions Zonal president and president of Headmasters Association of South Kanara. He established 500 self-help groups for women empowerment.

Among the awards he won were the Papal Award Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, Sandesha state award 2010 and the best teacher award from the Karnataka government.

In the year 2012, USWAS Shirva honoured him with special USWAS Decennial Award.

L Mendonca was my English teacher and principal during my PUC years(1979 - 1981). He was a very good teacher and disciplinarian. I still remember some of his quotes. In September 1980, he was given best teachers award by Karnataka government. He was given grand felicitation in Shirva with a procession from the bus stand to the institute. I still remember walking behind the elephant which was leading the procession.

My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.

My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.Mr. L. Mendonca was true to his vocation-as teacher, leader and strict disciplinarian.A true son of Shirva has inspired generations of young minds to be what they are today, spread all over the world.I was privileged to be his student. He taught me English and Chemistry, which he taught mixed with some fun (ondistu aamlajanaka, ondistu jalajanaka etc.to explain how water is constituted) followed by seriousness. The class of 1965 (batch) had a bench of grown up boys whom he used to call "sickfreed line" and one particular sentence with Latin accent "soro surre madurre peccatorre" cannot be forgotten. It is sad to note that he is no more with us.Yea,He fought the good fight, he finished his race and kept the faith.I am sure he is now enjoying the fruits of his labor in the Kingdom of Heaven. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

He was our Principal and English subject teacher for the 1st ever PU batch that started in 1967/68 (long time eh!) at St. Mary’s Shirva. I was browsing if I could trace any of my classmates in the condolences section. Principal Louis Mendonsa was a jovial witty English teacher, who many a time opened his session with a joke and apparently was very good at classical English literature, that was way beyond us then to understand and comprehend. He also made us to chomp the foundation of the extension for new building-a down to earth guy. He knew some of us personally and our classroom was next to his, so had to be extra cautious! Rest in Peace, dear Sir!

Mr L. Mendonca was a teacher par excellence. As Henry Adams said,
“A teacher affects eternity he can never tell where his influence stops.”
As an inspiring teacher, he moulded generations of students and inspired them to scale great heights of excellence in life. I was one of his blessed students. Along with Monsignor Hilary Gonsalves, he was an architect of the overall growth of Shirva. His dignified appearance, excellent communicative and oratorical skills, wise decisions, sense of humour, courageous and inspiring leadership, and unqualified love for students went a long way in making St Mary’s what it is today. He was inspired by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. As a Village School Master, he passed on his inspiration to his students. His legacy will go on through his students spread across the world to the succeeding generations. He was, indeed, a great and unique teacher. I remain greatly indebted to him. May the Lord grant him the crown of glory. May he bless us from heaven above in order to fulfill his vision for Shirva.

My hearty condolences to his bereaved family and the mighty family of his innumerable students. May he rest in peace.

    - Fr Valerian Mendonca

Prior to the Land Reformation Act, his family were landlords in Pilar (Pernal) and neighboring villages. It is L Mendonca, who, during that Act, helped all tenants in the legal 'Declaration' process and thus many families such as mine, are what today, primarily because of the great help by our noble 'Dhani'. L Mendonca will remain so forever.

We are deeply saddened by the demise of our beloved 'Head Master' Mr L. Mendonca Sir. A noble soul, excellent teacher of English, a disciplinarian, a good administrator, a mentor and a kind hearted Sir he was, the true sculptor of St. Mary's of Shirva. He was calling himself as the village school master( Ref: the poem by Oliver Gold Smith). As in that poem the village school master who ran his little school was a severe disciplinarian, so was L. Mendonca Sir. In spite of his strictness, the school master was jolly. The children laughed at his jokes with pretended joy. If they noticed any sign of anger on his face they would spread the news throughout the high school, so we were in St. Mary's.The school master was, in reality, a kind hearted person. He loved St. Mary's and made us to love St. Mary's. He was a great teacher who had great passion for teaching and he made us to develop passion for learning. What we are today, like many St. Mary'ans, are because of Sir, who molded us.
Sir, we salute you and in death we pray for the repose of your soul.
