Mangaluru: Property tax hike stays - MCC gets show cause notice

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 13: The hike in property tax affected by the administrator after obtaining signatures of legislators from the region was promised to be brought down to previous level by the current municipal administration led by Congress party. However, hopes of such a reduction have been dashed with Mangaluru Municipal Corporation getting notice from urban development department stating that the resolution passed by it to reduce property tax has been withheld, and calling for reasons why the same should not be treated as cancelled.

City mayor, Mahabala Marla, confirmed receipt of such a notice. He said that the notice clearly states that if a reply is not received within 25 days, the department will treat the resolution to bring down property tax as withdrawn.

The Congress leaders including Janardhan Poojary had promised during the electioneering that property tax rates will not be allowed to be hiked. The leaders knew well then that it was impossible, as it is mandatory for the corporation to hike property tax periodically once in three years, by at least 15 percent as per the provision of law. Both B A Mohiuddin Bava and J R Lobo, who were elected as MLAs after promising not to hike property tax, had signed the proceedings for affecting property tax hike when the corporation was under the administrator, after the election of mayor was held up due to litigation relating to reservation criteria.

It is almost certain now that the hiked property tax rates will stay at that level, and those who have not paid, hoping that the tax will come down, may have to pay the dues along with penalty, if they continue to delay payment of property tax. Those who had paid tax properly and were waiting to get reduction in next year's tax dues, are also a disappointed lot now.

    Af,, mangaluru,
Advance tax is not compulsory, but optional. If paid in advance by March, you will get a rebate of 5%. Good Scheme by MCC.

The tax structure in Mangalore city corporation is reasonable and every citizen should stick to the payment schedule. Early payment of Corporation tax also attracts a discount. With super luxurious apartment complexes coming up in our lovely city I wonder why we should demand further reduction in tax tariffs which actually benefits the City Development budget.

WHEN IT COMES TO TAXES EVERYONE HAS AN OPINION. TAXES ARE WHAT WE PAY FOR CIVILIZED SOCIETY. THERE IS NO WORST TYRANNY THAN FORCE A MAN TO PAY FOR WHAT HE DOES NOT WANT.BUT HERE THE CONGRESS TALKED AND MADE A RATTLING NOISE THAT THEY WILL NEVER AND EVER TOUCH THE PROPERTY TAX. NOW YOU CAN FEEL THE 'U' TURN. DON'T TRUST THESE MEN.

Now Congress party knows for sure that they are going to be wiped out from Karnataka in the next elections. So whatever they promised during Corporation elections has no value!

    Dear Allen,mangalore
I agree with your comment. But I wonder in that case who will be the successor in the state.BJP? or AAP?I am a BJPian but do not wish to BJP rule in Karnataka once again with present/same set of leaders at the top.I.E.,DVS,Ananthkumar,Ashoka,Ishwarappa etc.,Amit Shah should desist from promoting his party here for the next election in view of rampant corruction in previous BJP rule.Present Congress govt too going in line with previous govt and not interested in digging out corruption by BJP leaders because it has bigger such cases.AAP has base or competent leaders here. What next?Only solution is BJP with reconstructed leaders in the party.

I paid my property tax in advance for the year 2015-16 in this month. When I was filling the tax format by people who are doing the job work,I asked them promise by Sri Janardhana Poojary last year to reduced the hiked tax. They laughed at me saying that dont believe those politicians words.I was really surprised as I as 100% believed the statement by the Congress local leader. Now that this report is clear that there is no such reduction.Further more, there is no proper control/concern for MCC for the residents of Mangalore. If this small issue is not managed by the 1/2 dozen MLAs/MLC,strong Congressman Poojary who pretends love for Mangaloreans through various press meets from to time, what more we can expect from these galaxy of leaders? It is better to clear the doubt amongst the citizens and that no reduction in property tax.No problem for such candid words.I salute the Mangaloreans concern/duty bound for paying the proerty tax so promptly from to time.
