Dharwad: Trackman's presence of mind saves train accident

Dharwad, Feb 23: Due to the presence of mind exhibited by a railway trackman here, a catastrophe that would have accounted for several lives, injuries and heavy loss, was averted on Sunday February 22 morning.

The train from Bengaluru had reached Hubballi at around 6.50 am and was moving towards Dharwad. When the train was nearing Amargol, a trackman who was overtaken by apprehension, came running towards the train. The driver of the train could not initially see the trackman, Vijay Kumar, running towards the train with a red flag in hand, because of fog. After the train came still closer, the driver saw Vijay Kumar, and applied emergency brakes.

Vijay Kumar led the driver to the spot where railway track where it had broken, and some clamps which had come off. The passengers and railway officials alike thanked Kumar for his timely action that had saved their lives. Later, technicians were deputed and the track was repaired, paving way for resumption of train movement.
