I am here because of PM Modi, he saved me: Released Catholic priest

New Delhi, Feb 23 (HT) : Indian aid worker and Catholic priest Alexis Prem Kumar, abducted by the Taliban in Afghanistan eight months ago, returned home on Sunday — the result of months of back-channel negotiations.

The behind-the-scenes deliberations that began after Ramzan in June in an unnamed Gulf country — the government refused to give out operational details — was overseen by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and national security adviser Ajit Doval, and involved security agencies, sources said.

The priest gave the credit of his return to the PM. "This is because our Prime Minister Narendra Modi (that) I am here. He saved me. This (Monday) evening he talked to me when I was at the Kabul airport. Possibly, he took a lot of interest in rescuing me," Kumar told reporters after arriving at the Delhi airport on Sunday.

Modi spoke to the 47-year-old priest before he boarded a flight from Kabul to Delhi and also spoke to his sister and father in Tamil Nadu's Shivaganga district before breaking the news to the public in a series of tweets.

"Delighted at securing the release of Indian Jesuit priest Father Alexis Prem Kumar from captivity in Afghanistan," he tweeted. "Have spoken to Father Alexis Prem Kumar. Informed happy family of Father Alexis Prem Kumar of his safe return after 8 months in captivity."

Prem Kumar, working with the NGO Jesuit Refugee Service in the field of education, was abducted by Taliban gunmen from a school for refugees in Herat province on June 2 last year. Then began a long process of negotiation for the government, under intense pressure given the global response to the abduction.

"We are very happy. It is a government that works even on Sundays. We thank the Centre and Prime Minister Modi," said John Joseph, Prem Kumar's brother.

"The matter of his release was pursued by our leadership, including at the highest levels, the Prime Minister. We express our deep gratitude to all those who worked tirelessly over the last eight months to help in this humanitarian task of ensuring the safe release of one of our citizens," external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said.

Yeah i thank you modi hi.BUT mainly thank the people who presently were tracking this case in office and even in field. I really salute them, for their bravery, courage, and hard work for 8 months continuously. And yeah whichever religion the man was for 8 months in captivity it's our pm responsibility to give him a grand welcome back. May Jesus Christ save all and spread peace and happiness among each and everyone in this world.

I thank PM Modiji and his men in the Government for securing the release of a Indian National who happens to be a Catholic Priest, from the clutches of his abductors in Afghanistan.
PM took special interest in this and we all should be thankful for his concern towards every citizen of India.
Thank you PM and everyone involved.

When good is done we all must give credit and if wrong done we should point out so that the wrong is corrected.

Father Alexis Prem Kumar you maybe thinking Modi is involved in getting you released, but I and maybe more people like me will not believe that he or any BJP people helped in releasing you from Taliban's hand. So far our Foreign Minister have no clue where are the kidnapped people in Iraq by ISIS she have no clue if they are still alive or they are been uted. So how will Modi know about you? just you.. while there are more they 30 person kidnapped by ISIS.

Good thoughts. The priest who was bold enough to work in war torn Afghanistan, thanked PM Modi for securing his release is enough to prove the truth. He was ready to lay his life for a noble cause will not fear for life nor lie!
In scriptures we refer, maximum times, God worked through men. Therefore, we thank God first for all good works in life and then the person who does it for us.

This priest was in a war-zone, tending for the refugees. There is no reason for him to be kept under captivity, he should have been freed immediately. Regardless, thanks to all those who involved, he is back to a happy unity with the nation.

At the same time, there were Italian marines involved in shooting of fishermen in Kerala, their diplomatic sources sought their release, You, the very Modi praisers, criticized Sonia Gandhi accusing her to be helping the marines. Well, Sonia Gandhi's government is gone 10 months back - why are the Italians not hanged ? Does't it mean that Modi is helping them now ?

Relax gentlemen, relax. Bilateral dealings is not like drinking a glass of milk - leave it to professional handling of Diplomats, leave to be dealt as per extradition treaty. Modi is not God - we Indians deserve to be protected from any foreign captivity - foreign ministry is paid from our taxes to serve us - not to boast over one/two solved cases !

now after expiry of the date italy is not sending thier marines and giving absurd reasons for thier extended stay.india wll fight it in international court of justice hague and will bring the perpetors of crime into justice.there is no doubt about sincerity of indian govt in this issue.india haslaready publclystated this.

Why weren't your legal expertise speaking up in similar channel before ? Abb kirdaar palat gaya ?

Its time you Modi Bhakhts understand that every nation protects their citizens - as it has happened in this priest's case ! And, we Indians deserve to be protected - no matter which government is in the ruling !

yes u r right, now it is the responsibility of bringing to justice the culprits who killed kerala fisherman for no fault of thiers.

protecting every citizens irrespective of thier caste ,color and creed is paramount responsibility of any nation including india and there is no ambiguity in this issue.

it is easy for any countries govt to deal with a nation which is a member of united nations but not with any terrorist group like isis who captured 34 nurses or taliban who captured priest and the govt of aghanistan has no control over its territory except kabul.thats why its termed a achievement.if it was dealing with any other nation
it would have not got so much praise than this issue as it is not easy being successful in dealing with dreaded terrorists.even western nations failed in it before. remember daniel pearl issue?

    Mohanddas Kumar,

Certain Gulf countries are so overcrowded that the recent development is that they are signing a pact with the nations of the criminals to house them in the jails of their home country. For example, an Indian inmate will be deported to serve his sentence in Indian jail. If, under this pact many Indian inmates will be repatriated to India, I hope you will not credit Modi and Sushma Swaraj. I hope I don't have to explain you why so.

At the same time, it is very laughable that Indian inmates have pleaded not to deport them but allow them to remain in respective country's jail till their term is complete. Do you know why ? The jails in that country are far better than Indian jails. Isn't it truly laughable ?

So, inmates from Saudi Arabian jails will be freed someday but the credit shouldn't be given to the people you mentioned but Saudi Government who finds it as a burden to feed so many criminals.

indians who are languishing in indian jails dont want to be deported because they dont want thier families and friends to know that that they are in jail as they consider that it is hmiliating for them and dents thier reputation permenently in thier society.that is the reason .

i have read a article in gulf news and they had interviewed indian citizens and they tald that they dont want thier friends and relatives to know that they are in jail and not bcoz that they dont want to stay in indian jails.

crimes happen in usa and eu jails also like drug traficking, illegal s*x etc same as indian jals but only difference is infrastructure of jail.a documentary in national geographc channel gave an eye opening details of what is happening inside western jails which are looking like hotels outside but the activities that are happening inside is no different than indian jails.

these days afghanistan is tilting towards pakistan.the new president ghani is also not favourable to india unlike prev pm karzai.so india securing priest release is a great achievement.

rescuing 34 nurses from the clutches of dreaded isis who till now has not released anyone but killed every hostages including powerful usa and its allies and now rescuing priest from taliban is no mean task.
modi and mainly nsa ajit doval has played a crucial part in it.

i have read somewhere that ajit doval is highly rated by black water, usa and mossad as master negotiator and strategist who is a high value asset.

any way its good new that the priest has been released.

the same ajit doval had infiltrated into one of north east indian terrorist organisation before and dismantled thier infrastructure when he was a indian spy before.so it was expected of him.any way all is well that ends well

I agree to both of you! I have felt the negativity here, even when Modi is doing good! and most of it is unwarranted and name calling! Feku, chaiwala, Kaala Kaala chaiwala, hitler and what not! I cant even imagine to be in his shoes and work like him with fresh ideas! agreed, few in BJP are real useless and few of the hardliner sangh parivar, are as jealous as people here in daiji, they want to derail his every activity! but by God's grace he is doing his job well, only sleeps for 3-4 hours and thinks only positive for his couuntry and her people! I am blessed to have such a PM!

Just go though corpirate espinogae crackdown case and see how Doval and Modi got the whoel racket exposed! My country is safe and udaan bharne ke liye tayyar hai! andyways, let the baiters continue their job! we will praise the lord! :)

May this Jesuit priest Alexis Prem Kumar be helpful in the future to the downtrodden’s, the poor and the destitute’s of India.

His courage, determination to accomplish good work shows that even in the war torn countries God is active to keep sincere workers in the field to save and feed his children.

    GOD BLESS HIM ABUNDANTLY.

yes, even Paneer selvan, woman chandy, kerala samajam, LTTE can all claim they rescued, Alexis, People stranded in mosul, Basra, Pakistyani jails, Srilankan Jails and many such operation! ... But, the facts will be out in 10 years or so.. the intelligence officers involved (Ajit Doval and IB chiefs) , Sushma and her MEA team, and PM himself, will never get credit for such things, because, they are not supposed to disclose these things! may be when Ajit Doval writes a memoir, few of these things may come out in open!..

until then, yes, let us think Woman chandy and paneer pakoda, released these people! ... all that matters, is these victims have come back! vhe vhe vhe
