Mangaluru, Feb 23: Commuters in the city can heave a sigh of relief as one of the most important roads in Mangaluru, the stretch from Bunts Hostel to Jyothi (Dr Ambedkar circle), opened for traffic on Monday February 23.

The road was closed since the first week of November 2014 for concreting.

The newly-concreted road was inauraguted by district incharge minister Ramanath Rai.

In his address Rai said, "This is a very important road in Mangaluru. The project was undertaken with funds from the second phase of Rs 100 crore grant for development works.

"Most of the roads in the city are already concreted and this was one of the few left. Now this road also is ready," he said, thanking mayor Mahabala Maarla and MLA J R Lobo for the work.

He also mentioned that the work on the vented dam had halted because of lack of funds, but now since the funds have been released, the work will resume soon.

MLA J R Lobo thanked the mayor, MCC commissioner and engineers for completing the work on time. "Work on the streetlights, signboards, footpaths and other facilities will be completed very soon.

"Kadri and Car Street roads will also be concreted and the work will start soon," he added.

Mayor Mahabala Maarla said, "We had promised to complete the work by February 20 and we kept our promise. We did not have a grand inauguration as there was public demand to open the road as soon as possible. The city corporation will become an example for corporations of all others districts because of our development work."

Corporator A C Vinayraj informed that the project cost was Rs 2.14 crore but the work was completed at Rs 1.96 crore. The pending works will be completed at the earliest, he added.

MCC commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati, deputy mayor Kavita, Asha D'Silva, Sabitha Misquith, Praveen Chandra Alva, and others were present.
