Karkala, Jan 24: The grandeur and pomp of St Lawrence feast of Attur is something unique only to this place. No other feast of the region attracts such sea of crowds or commends such attention. St Lawrence, fondly known as "Kaarlada Santa" (saint of Karkala) has this magical power to pull crowds in lacs during the annual festivities.
As the feast entered the second day, the number of devotees visiting the shrine too increased. Huge of number of devotees participated in the Solemn Eucharistic celebration offered by Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza of Mangalore on Wednesday morning.
In his homily Bishop gave a clarion call to the devotees to strengthen the family life by adhering to virtues such as love, faith and commitment to each other. "Families are the nucleus of the society. If everything is right in families, almost all problems of the society too will be solved. By building good and virtuous families, we are contributing our mite in building up a healthy society," he preached.
Host of priests of the neighbouring parishes, deaneries and the diocese concelebrated in the Eucharist. Attur parish priest Fr Arthur Pereira welcomed the devotees to the second day of the festivities.
Since nothing is very sure about the proposed bus strike on Thursday January 25, the last day of feast, crowds were seen thronging in big numbers on Wednesday itself. Usually the mass on the last day of the feast is celebrated for the locals.
The church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Guide on the last day of the feast. Attur Church is the only church in the entire Mangalore diocese that celebrates this feast.
