Mangaluru: Miscreants pelt stones at St Joseph Vaz prayer centre at Panir

Mohan Kuthar
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Feb 25: Miscreants pelted stones at St Joseph Vaz prayer centre at Panir here, damaging the glass enclosure containing the statues of Mother Mary and Infant Jesus.

The stones were reportedly pelted on the night of Tuesday February 24. The incident came to light on Wednesday February 25 morning.

Though the culprits have not been identified, a school boy said that he saw two men sitting in front of the worship centre on Tuesday night. Locals also said that sometimes miscreants are seen indulging in illegal activities like ganja consumption in the vicinity.

Health minister U T Khadar visited the spot.

The minister, who visited the site in the morning, said that he hoped the culprits will be nabbed soon.

"Some anti-social elements threw a stone and damaged the glass of a statue to create insecurity and panic in society," Khader told mediapersons.

The minister said the site was littered with cigarette butts and hinted that the group might have been small.

He said police is looking for the culprits and that other citizens have also joined the operation.

"It is between good society and bad society. All 90 percent of the good society will join against them," he said.

Khadar said the Our Lady of Mercy Church located beside a graveyard in an isolated place, is 250 years old and was renovated 10 to 15 years ago. The prayer centre is attached to this church.

ACP Kalyan Shetty, SI Bharati and other police personnel arrived and investigated.

Mangalore diocese secretary M P Noronha has condemned the act of pelting stones on the statue of Mother Mary at Panir and has urged the police authorities to detect the persons who have committed the crime and to give protection to all churches and places of worship in the district.

I like your comment. I have relatively small name. If my name is Tiruvananthapura Laxminarayana Modaliyar Alias Tiruvananthapura Shivaramakrishnan Modaliyar, then I hardly get any space left for comment. Do you know the full name of Rangana Herath? If not check it. It is Herath Mudiyanselage Rangana Keerthi Bandara Herath. People comment here and it is the comment which is important and not their names. You faltu people are more interested in names because you want to know the religion of the person who posted comment. Looks like you people have jaundice of religion. Bottom line is comments are important in this column not how sweet your name is.

Don't fight for religion. Fight for peace. Hatred is like poison. It will kill everyone. Peace will bring unity. May god bless everyone and forgive the sins of those people who are trying to do all these. Stop all these hatredness my dear brothers and sisters. It will not bring you any good. You are teaching others to hate each other. You never know, when you will need help of your neighbour. If you don't save others. Others also will not save you. if you kill others, you also will be killed someday. Stop all these dirty jobs before you are stopped. There is only one god. Not two gods. Let us all believe that after we die we all go to one god. We all pray to different idols in the world, it does't mean that we go to different gods after we die.

Religion is a private thing which should remain within you and your activities should reflect your religion. That's the real meaning of Religion. NO religion leads to violence so please don't DEFAME your religion by doing wrong things. All have right to live with peace harmony and practice the religion which they belong. The easiest way of disturbing peace is to threw few stones to paryer centres, churches or even small grottos errected anywhere on the road side. After the success in Delhi elecions creating setback for BJP,these maroons have emboldened to sharpen their attacks against Hindu organisations in general and BJP in particular. These are all preplaned and easily bring bad name for BJP and allied organisations. It is not a good thing for Delhi police that even after two months of church attacks in the capital the real culprits have not been caught. Now the question is should the admn allow the Police Chief in his place? He should be and any inactive police officer responsible shunted out if he failes to book the culprits with in reasonable time.Otherwise people will loose faith on them.Govt should enact strict laws in the case of vandalisation of prayer places.Let there be law/order to police people to shoot at sight against those found doing these type of heinous act.Let them be shot below waist on sight in the act.If necessary be shot or encountered on the spot.If we do not bring fear among these anti socials groups will not remain the same in future irrespective of who is ruling the state/centre.

This could be an isolated incidence by someone ‘under the influence’ of intoxicant or ‘substance use.’ CCTV is no help if such incidents take place during power outage, which are rampant and a single watchman too may not be an effective deterrent and expensive. I feel such outdoor installations should be secured with strong but adequate ‘wire-mesh’ type grill that allows view of the idols and at the same time, secure them from vandalism. It is most likely the elders of the ‘miscreant’ might light a candle to ask for forgiveness! Mother Mary is a universal mother and no sane person would pelt stone at own mother. Recently Canonized St. Zuze Vaz is a very humble and very forgiving saint.

India is basically a secular Nation by itself. Even though I am an NRI whenever I visit Visit I see very cordial relation between communities. Even people with BJP affiliation are having good relation with Muslims and Christians. So I really wonder what is happening to this country sometime ? The main reason for communal discords are few elements in society but unfortunately they find support from political parties. They are finding this as shortest way to win election. Also the second part is laws are not enforced against the people who are causing communal disharmony. Even if they get arrested parties treating them as Heroes resulting more such fringes arising.

    Vinay,
I have an answer for your question ‘why people are fighting in the name of religion???. The people (front-lines) who pelt stones and create chaos are innocents, really used by so called leaders to fulfill their political agenda. Stop spitting venom on other faiths, and brainwashing the youth saying Hinduism is in danger? Do you really think Hinduism is in danger! Nothing happened to Hinduism, it survived in spite of 800 years of Muslim and Christian rule, will continue till the end of this world. Stop spitting venom and brainwashing youth, to get political mileage instead preach on what your religious scriptures say.
What is the use of arresting the person who pelted stone, instead they should arrest the people who instigated the common man to do so but nowadays nothing happens to the people who spit venom and instigate the common man for violence. Secondly negligence of state. It’s the electoral calculations of the politician in power as well as in oppositions and the benefits they perceive from violence.
There should be a law where civil servants/police legally liable for riots. They will be fired, demoted, or reprimanded, if a riot takes place on their watch.

Still searching answer for why people are fighting in the name of religion????
In this forum itself we can see, Christians and Muslims blame Hindus Hindus blame Muslims.
Why can't we live in peace? At the end of the day, we have to fill up our stomach. Nobody will come and feed us. Just follow your religion and move forward. Why we have to peep in other's house?
People are unnecessarily bringing politics here, some are blaming Modi and some are George. Let the law take its own action. Before commenting people should read the news properly. In that place, sometimes miscreants are seen indulging in illegal activities like ganja consumption in the vicinity. If so, then why the church authority did not inform the same to police?
For all the commentators, I kindly request not to fight against the religion. Just have faith in god!

Secularism is under threat in Karnataka since 2013.The CM is caught sleeping mostly & HM is busy with his Kerala business. God save minorities in Karnataka under congress. Thats why we need Congress mukht Karnataka to ensure safety of all & true secularism "....

Joseph, dont think i am a communal who supports throwing stone at religious places..its shame for me if any one from my community involved in this act..but i am outraged since for each & every incident whether its theft or robbery without any investigation it was blamed on particular organisation or BJP..can you explain who got political mileage/benifits from above incident..which political leader/party got bad name nationally/internationally for the above incidents..who lost vote & who gained votes due to the above..Do you think any political party mad enough to tarnish its image nationally/internationally..you know very well who is going to benefit from this..you should also know that its 2 years now Congress Govt, why they didnt fixed any one on so called attacks & why no new committee formed..dont you think Govt accepted indirectly that somashekhar was right..every one cried for GHAR WAPSI, if its crime or illegal why not state Govt acted upon..Kerala Congress CM,who is a christian openly said it doesnt warrant any action..its the truth..accept ot not..

The incidents against minorities especially the christians have increased hundred fold after the BJP came to power. No leader from the party is interested to stop this including the PM. So fingers can be pointed directly. Mother Theresa controversy is another agenda of the "So called development agenda" which is developing intolerance and hatred. To develop and progress this agenda.

Its true that we get extremely hurt when peaceful existence of our faith is disturbed. But we should not ignore the information in the news hat the vicinity is active with drug users. Noteworthy that once a person is under drug or alcohol influence, his behaviour cannot be predicted. True that he could hit a fellow addicts head instead of the glass of the enclosure but we can't ignore the maximum possibility given a thought to prevailing/past social pests.

However, it is more important that we give priority to human attacks (such as that happened to a 11 year old girl) than lifeless images of our deity. Images can be repaired, re-erected, a girl dead can't be brought back to life. Let us leave it to the authorities to investigate than we speculating.

Lets be vigilant and socially responsible than waking up to an unhealthy event like these elements attacked our children tomorrow.

With the number of such acts constantly increasing and no swift action being taken because of whatsoever reasons.

I suggest, that instead of relying on authorities.People from Churches can begin night-watches in the locality of their churches.
If no one will do anything to help us out..we might just have to help ourselves.

God has definitely gifted us in mind and body that we can be the solution for this.

In order to create hatred in the community, some D***heads have done this. I really pity what India will be in the next few years if this communal hatred continues. Some A******e giving nonsense comments on Mother Teresa and some supporting the nonsensical comments. The stone pelting work is just the case of some retarded mind to create some tense in the city. I wish India could live in harmony without any bias on the religion.
90% of the politicians are corrupted and therefore its difficult to get back India to be a peaceful nation. The goons are supported by the bigger goons sitting in power. Either be it BJP, Congress or JDS all are power crazy. Let people choose what they want to follow and peace will prevail instead of forceful agendas which creates hatred. But unless the religious groups like RSS, Shiv sena, BD, VHP are rooted out there wont be any peace in this country. Let the younger generation join hands and work towards the betterment of the nation in terms of infrastructure, rooting out drugs, better education, higher standards of living for everyone. Let all communities join hands and do good to India. Wish to see a peaceful India.

because this is clearly the 'modus operandi' of RSS-BJPigs...they are following the 2008 September pattern of attacks.

Check archives to see how sanghi-bajrangis were involved in Sept. 2008 church attacks across Karnataka under BJP government.

Its a shame that sanghis are turning a peaceful religion into an anti-minority cult.
