Mangalore, Jan 26: The grand celebrations of Republic Day were held at Nehru Maidan here on Friday January 26 morning.  The celebrations began with the hoisting of national flag by district-in-charge minister B Nagaraj Shetty.  Police band played national anthem soon after the flag hoisting generating strong feelings of patriotism among the gathered.

After the flag hoisting minister received a guard of honour and proceeded to view police parade on an open jeep.  Before minister delivered his Republic Day message, students from Chinmaya English Medium High School, Kadri sang the nadageete (state anthem).

Four young students who have brought laurels to their schools as well as to the district were honoured for their distinctive achievements.  They are as follows:

  • Prakhyat V Raj of St Theresa High School, Bendore -Bagged first prize in 100 metre free-style swimming at the 10 National Swimming Championship held at Rajkot in Gujrat in November 2006.
  • Kavya V Ullal, Bharatiya English Medium School Ullal.  Gold Medal in Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Asia Yuko and Karate Championship.
  • Yashas Kishan, Milagres High School - First prize in 13-14 year age group in National-level Karate championship.
  • Sharanya Mahesh, Canara Girls High School, Dongarakeri - Silver medal in National-level skating championship.

After the felicitation programme students from various schools in the city presented march-fast.  Students from Sacred Hearts School Kulshekar, Government Teachers' Training School Balmata, Shri Narayana Guru English Medium School Katipalla, Ladyhill High School and Gujrat English Medium High School, Alake presented a disciplined march-fast.

Superintendent of Police B Dayananda, deputy commissioner M Maheshwar Rao, MLA N Yogish Bhat, mayor Vijaya Arun, MCC commissioner Krishnappa Poojary were also present on the occasion.
