Mangaluru: CPI(M), Christian leaders slam Bhagwat's statement on Mother Teresa

Mangaluru, Feb 26: The CPI(M) along with Christian leaders of the city on Thursday February 26 held a protest in front of the DC’s office here condemning RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's statement that 'conversion' was the real motive behind Mother Teresa’s service to the poor.

Addressing the protest, CPI(M) district secretary Vasanth Achar said, "India has given shelter to all people. But minorities are being attacked very frequently these days. They are treated as if they are supposed to leave this nation.

"RSS members are determined to break the unity of the nation. They say Christians convert people but I say they do not. People get converted to Christianity on their own wish. Mohan Bhagwat’s allegation about Mother Teresa rendering service to the poor in order to convert them to Christianity is wrong. CPI(M) strongly condemns this."

Oneil D'Souza, director of St Antony Jeppu, said, "This is a sad thing. Mother Teresa who has brought name to the nation has been wrongly accused. She has been awarded with Nobel Prize for her selfless service. Has RSS won at least one Nobel Prize for the nation? Let them serve the poor first like Mother Teresa and then talk."

Yadav Shetty said, "Mother Teresa's service to the poor and contribution to this nation can never be forgotten. When a high-ranking police officer visited her ashram in West Bengal, he saw her treating leprosy patients. She asked him pray to his God for the health of the patients. He never said that Mother was serving the poor and the sick for conversion. RSS accuses Christians of converting but when we asked VHP leader M B Puranik when and where they are converting, he did not have an answer. CPI(M) will fight against evil elements which spread hatred in the society."

Addressing the protesters, Roy Castelino said, "When Mother Teresa visited India, she considered this country as her own. She rendered selfless service to the poor. She treated them and took care of them. RSS people say we convert, but if so, our population would not have been just three percent, it would have been 50 percent. Our priests and nuns through their educational institutions have educated millions of people. We are Indians first."

Muneer Katipalla said, "I never thought anyone would utter such statements about Mother Teresa ever. Mother Teresa served the poor who were marginalized and boycotted by the society. Mohan Bhagwat should have thought twice before uttering such a statement. RSS should realize that if it tries to use the government as remote control and enforce its ideology, then the verdict of the people in the next general elections would be similar to the recent Delhi election."

Vasudev Uchil said, "Mother Teresa and Gandhiji are the people who lived for and served the poor. Mohan Bhagwat is spreading false statements about Mother Teresa. RSS said that they will build a temple in the name of Godse who murdered Gandhi. After Christian missionaries came to India, they have served people by giving quality education, healthcare to the poor, building orphanages and old age homes. What has the RSS done? They have sevaks who are trained to take lathis (sticks) and use it on minorities. CPI(M) will protect the minorities whenever RSS attacks them."

Fr J B Crasta, Fr Francis Almeida, Stany Alvares, Sr Shanthi, Sheldon Crasta, Krishnappa Konchady and others were present during the protest.

Mr. Brahmananda,This is about tarnishing the good image of Mother Theresa who has done a great service to the helpless suffering people in India. No one has the right to do this just because you are a majority religion in India. Will you keep quiet if someone tries to spoil the image of your family member who has lived a very honorable life. We are not talking about Christians here but about good person who has led a selfless life. However let us not forget that Christianity is an universal religion in the whole world with the highest number of followers whereas Hinduism is restricted only to India. By the way India does to belong to Hindus alone it is melting pot of different cultures though the majority may be Hindus. People like Baghwath have to stop issuing such cheap statements and thereby indoctrinating good Hindus. Otherwise Hindus will face similar situations in other countries specially USA. But I know if this happens then you will not get heckled as per your comments.

I can not understand how people can become so irrational when it come to religion. I dont want to argue whether there is a god or not. As I dont know. I have not seen him. He/She/It may exist or may not exist. Yes we can tell who our parents are through DNA testing. None of the religions are rational in nature. I cannot understand religious texts like vedas/geetha, bible and Quran can be relevant today in its entirety. There are many irrational beliefs advocated in these texts about slavery, violence and irrational beliefs. We can take good things and be more pragmatic and realistic about life. I am a humanist and religion is just a cultural thing for me. These religions have helped us in all these years to live in communities. As we humans have conciousness and mind, spiritualy is something unique to us and its individualistic. Each persons understanding and realization about who we are and what are doing is different. We have to explore more on spirituality. It lies within us.

Retrospect and see why the Missionaries of Charity are invited by so many countries worldwide to set up their branches. Is there even 1 branch of the divisive RSS in any other country???? Well JL, I have seen several preachers speak Ill about the Hindus. I have read historic articles from the archives where the missionaries stated that the tuluva folks played devils music in their marriages. I am a tuluva and we still play the same music. These missionaries now have their churches, hospitals and converted folks still flourishing in tuluvanadu. Don't you think we did not show tolerance to all of these?, or did you expect us to use violence and curb their growth or end their existence?. I thought you were all for non violence and now you all seem to be upset with what I stated?.

Frankly speaking the ardent lover of Hinduism Bhagwat and his followers unable to see the only 2% of minority christians contributing in all spheres viz education, medical help, social upliftment from their institutions and trusts to all citizens irrespective of caste and creed. Also the VHP/RSS are more worried that the people who are being educated would lead the country as good citizens of tomorrow and they will not have a place for dictating the illiterate and the poor. Hence they are indirectly targeting with such comments and in fact this would lead more people to follow Christianity

By now Bhagwat must have got the full details of Mother Teresa's tremendous work. A normal person can not do such a thing. Siddu,ex-MP and ex-cricketer has clearly said it, that when he saw Mother Teresa cleaning the wounds of the leprosy patient, he could not bear to see it. He ran out and puked. Bhagwat you want more proof? He further says he went to her room to meet her as he had Rs.10,000 to be handed over to the ashram. You know what Mother said seeing the money, "we want helping hands more than the money". Wish Bhagawat would have visited to her ashram once.

Yes exactly. let RSS, BJP, VHP do charity service and rehabilitation like Mother Teresa did and other minority are doing free of charge and pick the mentally challenged, dirty stinking beggars and rehabilitate themselves which is difficult to practice but easy to blame conversion which they did force conversion in Kerala and many other places. Shame on them speaking uncultured. In those days Lepers were curcial bcos of non- cureable and were thrown out by their own family which BJP, RSS, VHP could have raised them. why don't they do themselves rather talking rubbish against person who had done and recognised worldwide for simplicity and all the way from Albania to India when Indians are not ready but enjoying life with parties, weddings, etc ignoring this great service.

Sentiments expressed by various politicians and leaders at different times have their own hidden reasons. Many of these untimely sentiments can trigger emotional uproars and can also lead to many other communal disturbances. All of these unrequired tensions and ill-feelings can lead to many other consequences that few of the dirty politicians may enjoy but they do not help in any way for continued peace and harmony of the nation.

Under the democracy and freedom that prevails lavishly in India, some of the unwanted sentiments expressed by few politicians should be handled with utmost care. The time is fragile and the religious remarks expressed under the freedom we have available should be peacefully tackled.

Our leaders on the top therefore have a great responsibility to watch out so that the petty little controversies can be mutually solved without causing major outbursts.

What is happening in the neighboring countries under the shadow of religious turmoil is a classic example of how situation has gone far beyond control and the major powers of the world are finding it very difficult to even intervene. As a result, hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost causing destruction of mankind and devastation of properties.

People of India should therefore handle each and every situation very cautiously by utilizing our collective secular values. Hinduism is a good faith filled with non-interference, forgiveness and tolerance. The peace loving people of India, including the Hindus, Moslems and Christians must get together regularly and table many delicate issues specially those relating to our religions, and find a mutually beneficial ground thru timely compromise.

President Obama, thru his recent visit to India during the Republic Day celebrations has strongly underlined the beauty of secularism that prevails in India where we have the largest population of Moslems blended so well in the mainstream of our great country. Peace and Harmony is KEY.

    Please read this carefully.

Here are Gandhiji's views from his Bihar notes (8-10-1925) - "Christian missionaries have been doing valuable service for generations, but in my humble opinion, their work suffers because at the end of it they expect conversion of these simple people to Christianity ... How very nice it would be if the missionaries rendered humanitarian service without the ulterior aim of conversion."

Would you dare to protest against Gandhiji like you did now ? Did he say anything different from Dr Bhagwath?

    Fri, Feb 27 2015

Sir, thank you for your quotation of Gandhiji about the Christians. Two of his closest friends were Rev. C. F. Andrews (his mentor) and Dr. E. Stanley Jones.

Dr. Stantley Jones and the great U.S. journalist Louise Fisher wrote biographies of Gandhiji, and in both of the biographies, it was clearly mentioned that Gandhiji had a picture of JESUS at his Sabarmathi Ashram with the inscription " He is our peace".

I have introduced the same JESUS to many people, but I had no intention for them to change their names and to force them to join a Christian denomination. But, a few have joined, since leaving the college when I met them, they told me that they are followers of CHRIST.

Gandhiji sung the last song one day before his death was " when I survey the wondrous cross".

Please tell me, whether Gandhiji was converted to Christianity?

When he tried to attend a Church in South Africa, he was not treated in a proper manner by the Priest and the deacon of that Church and at that point Gandhiji became an anti-Christian. But, when he read the beatitudes " Book of Mathew chapter 5", Gandhiji became a real follower of JESUS CHRIST.

JESUS doesn't force anybody to follow HIM, it is upto the person to make the decision.

What is the purpose of Bhagwat to make such a statement now? It is simply to trigger frictions. Can he give the list of converts through the humanitarian work of Mother Teresa? How many thousands were served by her? It is better for Bhagwat or anybody not to make simply hypothetical statements touching any religion or person.

This is a beautiful saying of Mother Teresa which should apply to RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, "If you Judge people, you will have no time to love them". If Hinduism of RSS, VHP is to say that Hinduism is far better than Islam and Christianity, then they are fooling themselves and their community. RSS VHP BJP should talk of love because we are first human beings, then we are Indians and last we are Hindus or Muslim or Christians. We can express love between human beings and today whatever BJP, RSS and VHP are doing is nothing but spreading hatred and evil. A few hundreds of people cannot dictate religion to a billion population. Time they get up from their deep sleep otherwise their own community will pull them down.

I don't think anyone is saying that Hinduism is better than any other religion in the first place. Hinduism is not a religion in the first place, it is a Dharma that we followed in this region. Islam and Christian have gained foot hold due to propagation done by missionaries.
Mother Theresa helping the way she did was a respectable effort, but we should understand that it was amidst the Hindu majority that she was able to do what she did and reached the level beyond human comprehension.
However, the point posted by the Hindu's or VHP's that it was not a humanitarian effort but one with an intent to proselytize. If it were true then it would make it a religious agenda. However helping anyone in any possible way is a good thing.

Now there is a divide. Mother Theresa has become a Christian property as opposed to an Indian pride.
