Udupi, Feb 27: Members belonging to various trade unions staged a ‘jail bharo’ agitation in front of Udupi post office on Thursday February 26.

Addressing the protestors, Balakrishna Shetty, secretary, CITU Udupi, said, “The central government has introduced anti-public policies such as ordinance on land acquisition, direct capital investment in insurance field where share amount has increased from 26 to 49 and withdrawal of 10 percent capital from Coal India Limited.”

He alleged that the privatization policy would cause difficulties to the common people and urged the fixing of minimum wage for Asha and Anganwadi workers.

Admar Sripati Acharya, convener of JCTU, said, “Central government is hindering the life of beedi workers by imposing a ban on tobacco products. The government should think about the poor people before taking any decisions. The land ordinance promoting commercialization will cause farmers to lose interest in agriculture.”

U Gurudatt, deputy secretary, Insurance Employees’ Organization, said, “There is no provision to include private banks in the Jan Dhan Scheme. All 11 trade unions have same objectives.” He demanded that the governmental rules at the center be remedied.
