Mangaluru, Feb 27: Hours after the horrific accident at Nanthoor took three lives, relatives of Preetham Pinto who died in the mishap, along with locals gathered at the accident spot and staged a protest.

Preetham Pinto (21), Veena (40) and her daughter Nitisha (13) died after a tipper went out of control reportedly due to brake failure and rammed into an electricity pole near Nanthoor circle before crashing into an Alto car, which in turn hit Preetham's bike. The accident took place on Friday February 27 evening.

A few hours after Preetham succumbed to injuries, his neighbour Lawrence D'Souza, member of the Konkani Sahitya Academy, and locals gathered near Nanthoor junction and participated in the protest. Konkani Sahitya Academy president Roy Castelino was also present.

The protestors said that despite several accidents at Nanthoor circle, the authorities had failed to take any suitable measures to set right the problem. "There is no proper signal nor enough police personnel to monitor the traffic at this junction," they said. They also demanded that the lorry driver be arrested soon and stringently punished.

They also demanded that the DCP visit the spot and refused to end the protest without meeting him.

Locals too joined the protestors and they blocked traffic for sometime.

The Kadri police arrived at the spot and tried to convince the protestors, but in vain.

When the situation seemed to go out of control, the KSRP team was called into action and the police resorted to mild baton charge to disperse the crowd, after which the protest came to an end.

Speaking to daijiworld, Kadri inspector T D Nagaraj said that though the demands of the protestors were justified and they had the right to protest, the police action was necessary as many locals joined in the protest and caused public inconvenience by blocking the traffic.

Lawrence D'Souza who was injured in the lathi charge has been admitted to Father Muller hospital in city. Sources close to him said that he did not lead the protest was but was only proceeding to the police station to file FIR related to the incident as the representative from the family of the deceased Preetham Pinto.

MLA J R Lobo visited Lawrence in the hospital later. It is learnt that Lawrence complained to Lobo that he was hit by inspector T D Nagaraj, and Lobo promised to look into the matter.

Our district MPs,MLAs,District Administration dont have time to set the nantoor circle right and save the peoples lives. But they are all very quick and very fast in beating ordinary people. if they exercised the same speed and power in correcting the nantoor circle by this time they would have saved many lives. Nisar Ahmad is right....'kurigalu saar, kurigalu". We are really 'kurigalu' to bring these people in power.

These Authority persons never bother to set right the things affecting the people because if any such incidents occur then it is the common man is the sufferer, and they are not the suffers. Police people resorting the Lati Charge cannot be 100% justified. But htey must remove the security they have given to these so called "Authority". Then only in such cases will these people feel the pain of common man

Similar accident occurred in Bangalore where a water tanker jumped a red signal. The driver when caught blamed brake failure, but on checking the police found it wasn't true. The result in both these cases are loss of innocent lives.
We need a scientific solution for the problem at Nanthoor circle keeping in mind that the new service bus stand would come up at Pumpwell. All express buses from Udupi/Manipal and Karkal/Moodbidre will then have to turn towards Pumpwell adding to more chaos. Until such a solution is arrived at, better to install signal lights.
    May the departed souls RIP.

    May their souls RIP.
Laws in this country need be amended . Tipper trucks should be checked thoroughly.
One just cannot see their Number plates or any Rear brake/indicator lights..They drive rash ..Police personnel should also check these vehicles thoroughly instead of only the Two wheelers....

driver/owner of that killer tipper must be booked under "goonda-act"..& its a cold blooded murder by them.both must be given capital punishment.
IGNORANCE/carelessness is the real cause for this inexcusable crime.
3 precious lives lost & no u wont get them back ever.
BAN all the vehicles after 15 years of service.do NOT allow any vehicle above this limit enter m'lore city.
ANY driver involved in accident resulting in death must be given minimum 20 year of jail jis license permanently revoked.
ONLY these measures will bring some sense in2 reckless driving as well as keeping vehicles road worthy.otherwise more innocents will lose their dear ones never to see them AGAIN.

i have noticed rash driving of this tipper drivers on highway roads, police dept must arrest these owners of these trucks and put behind the bars, bcos of them and their guidelines to reach the spot to supply concrete to the construction site.
for bus drivers there is a harassment from time keepers in the stand if they are late they will collect fine from them, stop all these nonsense first. bus and lorries always travel on the foot path on these roads during rush hours.
and the results is this ,poor innocent lives are gone.

When required at nanthoor Junction one hardly sees two policemen, to suppress a public protest in the same place , you have two dozen policemen. This is our priority.

The accident was expected. No one is bothered to rectify the problems at Nanthoor circle from such a long time. Governments just keeps changing but the problems of the people just keeping mounting. The brake failure of the tipper cannot be judged as an accident. Proper investigation has to be carried out. Also the vehicle's are not inspected yearly as it is done in other European and Gulf countries. Also the RTA officers should be taken into investigation as most of the vehicles are rendered pass to run on roads without stringent inspection.
A new plan should be proposed for the circle ( an over bridge would be a perfect solution) so that the highway vehicle movement runs without any disruption.
The road marking should be made brighter and lane system should be followed.
Pedestrian crossing only in the designated areas should be made mandatory.
Emergency vehicle should be assigned to remove the broken vehicles on busy streets in order avoid traffic congestion
As long as corruption doesn't end nothing can be done. Hope we get a good leader to solve all the problems.

Nanthoor junction is a mess of vehicles with eager drivers entering their way out without traffic sense in all directions, the more mannerless are citybus drivers and lorries...The solution to prevent unnecessary accident is, to imbibe traffic sense to all public transport drivers by the traffic police by checking regularly for documents and fining heavily for missdeeds of drivers..

If the protest was only intended to draw the attention of the department of law and order to find ways and means of controlling the traffic problem in Nanthoor - THERE IS SOME JUSTIFICATION. However there should not be A MOB MENTALITY to disrupt normal life. Let us hope that that stringent measures will be taken to install necessary signals to control traffic in delicate areas.

In Nathoor circle,I have spotted traffic police personnel interested in catching two wheelers for ....
But in some time only. This particular incident is due to break failure and not man made.Under pass or over bridge for NH crossing need of the hour.NHAI has to look in to the matter and do needful.

Accidents occur only due to following factors
1.Failure of Vehicles Brake failure is common and that is it is compulsory for all vehicles to test Brake and certify
    2. Faulty Road
3.Failure of Drivers Good driving license system required
    4. Other factors like jay walking
Tackle one by one and then there will not be any accidents.
