Shanta (24), a resident of Meenakali but hailing from Bagalkot was murdered by her husband Shashikant (30) who too hails from Bagalkot.

Shashikant and Shanta had been married for some years now.  But owing to increasing differences between them, they had separated from each other.  Accordingly Shanta was living in one Pushpa Mendon's house at Meenakali while Shashikant lived somewhere else.

Shashikant had gone to his native Bagalkot and returned on Sunday.  He came to Shanta's house at Meenakali this morning and forced her to come with him to his house.  But Shanta told him that she would not accompany her.

Enraged by this, he tried to grab her and pull her along.  Shanta managed to escape from his hands and ran out from her house.  Shashikant too chased her and when she entered a neighbours house for refuge, he too followed her there and stabbed her.

Eye-witnesses to the murder

As a result Shanta sustained serious injuries and died on the spot owing to excessive bleeding.  Meanwhile Shashikant was caught by locals while trying to escape from the place.

He has now been handed over to Panambur police.
