Mangaluru: Opposing privatization move, port workers propose indefinite strike

Mangaluru, Mar 1: Opposing union finance minister, Arun Jaitley's initiatives to privatize ports in an attempt to attract private investments in these sectors, port workers have threatened to go on indefinite strike from March 9.

The minister has shown inclination to attract investment in ports in public domain like the earlier successful scheme of luring private investments in smaller ports. He also proposes to make large tracts of land lying unused in ports available for private use.

As per the finance minister's proposals, 12 main ports in the country, Kandla, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Murmagoa, New Mangaluru, Kochi, Chennai, Ennore, VO Chidambaranar port, Visakhapatnam, Paradeep and Kolkatta, will be brought under private domain in phases. They will be managed by companies registered under Companies Act.

Port trust workers unions have vehemently opposed the move, terming it as a measure of selling them off to private companies. All India Port Workers Association secretary, Uday Choudhury, said that port workers will go on indefinite strike from March 9 onwards to register their opposition to this proposal.

    Corporatisation does not necessarily mean privatisation.Having seen NMPT, Mangalore function for the last thirty years, I can safely say that the aggressive black-mailing Labour force (R.C.W.) BORDERING ON MILITANCY with support from persons backed by the Political parties are holding the PORT, PORT MANAGEMENT AND THE PORT USERS TO RANSOM Please understand that the port is not functioning to its potential because of the aggression of the labour force, the port management is very weak to take on the labour force political intereference and lack of political will by the political parties, trade and industry bodies and the trade and industry who are the port users. The port is presently used mainly for IMPORT AND EXPORTS by MRPL (who are not dependeant on PORT LABOUR) COAL, TIMBER, AMMONIA and such other commodities are imported through MANGALORE PORT only because the said importers have no other choicemilitant labour force is the bane of the MANGALORE PORT. port is surviving only because of the assured income from NMPT and other such importers who are using the port resources to bare minimum but nevertheless paying through their nose for the monopolist services of NMPT ATLEAST CORPORATISATION IS HOPED TO ADDRESS THE EVILS AFFLICTING nmpt

    Privatization of Port means, ports are sold to Adanis. When FEKU decides, the ports will be handled by Adanis, no one can stop him.

    NMPT Deckhands are White collared Labourers their Salary is in the range of 4500/ PM which is the highest. It was a irony of error. No Doubt they dont want to work.

    Corporate Tax reduced and Service tax for ordinary people increased!!!There shows support to haves!!!Now privatization of major ports of India goes in lines with policy of Modi BIRYANI FOR AMBANI-ADANI....and GANJEE OOTA FOR AAM AADMI....(certainly those named entity will catch all these port's operations)
