Bengaluru: Power cut killed man in hospital, claims family

Bengaluru, Mar 2 (DHNS): The family of a 53-year-old man, diagnosed with swine flu, said he died at the State-run Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD) in the City on Sunday as ventilators shut down following a power cut.

The hospital authorities attributed B G Ganesh’s death to his deteriorating health condition, but admitted that there was a power cut followed by ventilator shutdown in the intensive care unit (ICU) where he was undergoing treatment.

Ganesh was an auto consultant and a resident of Bapujinagar on Mysuru Road. His relatives staged a protest in front of RGICD, off Nimhans campus, on Sunday afternoon against the “negligence”.

Uma, Ganesh’s wife, said he was admitted to hospital on February 20. She said he died as the ventilator shut down at 3 am on Sunday following a power cut. On alerting the hospital authorities, Uma claimed she was asked to wait till they got the device functioning again.

“We were asked to wait till it was repaired. He was declared dead at 4:30 am, and we were forced to take the body without a post-mortem,” she said.

Ganesh’s family claimed he had nearly recovered and was shifted from the ICU to the H1N1 ward on Friday. However, since he experienced respiratory problems on Sunday, he was shifted back to the ICU.

RGICD medical director Dr Shashidhar Buggi said: “There was a power cut. However, we have a 250-kW generator for the campus. There were technical issues due to which there was power cut in the Medical Intensive Care Unit. At 4:15 am, I got a call from the hospital regarding the power cut.”

He added: “Soon, we had instructed that all patients be treated with hand-held ventilators and be moved to the surgical ICU.” He added, “His (Ganesh’s) condition was critical. His condition was co-morbid as he was obese. This is the cause of death.”

Minister for Medical Education Dr Sharan Prakash R Patil has sought a report on the incident, reports DHNS from Bengaluru. Patil said he has directed officials concerned to visit the hospital. “No compensation will be given to the family. However, if the doctors are found guilty, action will be taken against them,” he said.

    shame on Govt.and hospitalfor making patients death.when outside a Person dies due to accident or murder etc,that can be accepted.but in Hospital of not having elementary facilitys of electricity to the important Units to save life,then they Need not lead a Hospital.Electricity fail is not new in India and they should be prepared for it and see that immediately a Generator automatically starts to hold up the Units without failure.They should not give thousand causes now for his death.when one has to give Oxygen supply per Hand ,you Need one Person pro Patient to reanimiation .thats impossibe,so many personal is not there.when in this computerage ,when they are not able to manage such prelimnary things to manage,health Minister,and Hospital managemnet should resign.and look for another Job.I really feel pity for patients there.may his Soul rest in peace.heartfelt sympathy to the Family.One more word,when they say he was obese,he did servive till then.how?They are trying to bind bringols to our ears.shame.

    Shame on all those responsible for his death. Nobody will be able to understand pain and agony of the family. Two young children have to spend the rest of their life without father and wife is widowed at young age.NOBODY VALUES HUMAN LIFE IN India. May his soul rest in peace and may almighty God grant peace and courage to the family.

    Here is a case of failure in power supply as admitted by Hospital authorities IN A HOSPITAL OF REPUTE. The cause of the death can be attributed to failure of ventilator due to an interruption in power supply. The hospital should have an alternative to replace the power supply viz a generator. Since this was not done , here is a clear case for the relatives of the deceased patient to demand compensation from the authorities concerned.

    Mr. Joe, Carefully read the news. Generator is available(Condition unknown). But all need is UPS for CCU, ICU and OT lighting and equipments. Read my comments

    Very sad news, death due to ventilator power failure (Now Docs may give thousand reasons and medical terms for the cause of death) but reality is the life supporting equipments failure due to power cut. All national and international guideline for ICU call for uninterrupted power supply (UPS) for all life supporting equipments. The quote from Medical director 250KW generator available, but dear Director, generator is back up supply for all essential equipment like essential lighting, emergency lift, fire pump and fire detection system & UPS battery charging ete. which in terms of electrical engineering terms called as “brake and make” Mean to say when power failed, generator will start and synchronize with the connected load. It may take some minutes to restore the power supply to the connected load. This power supply is not at all helpful to life supporting equipments as “ brake and make” supply need to restart all life supporting equipments manually and require time, (but may require charging UPS battery during the long power cut.) The concerned authority should check all hospitals with ICU, CCU is equipped with UPS for life supporting equipment
