Bengaluru, Mar 2 (DHNS): Hundreds of women and college students gathered at the Freedom Park on Sunday and raised voice against increasing crimes on women. 

The protest was organised by Karnataka Janashakti, Mahila Munnade and People’s Movement.

Women’s rights advocate and social activist Flavia Agnes urged the State government to follow in the footsteps of Maharashtra government and release financial assistance of Rs two lakh to each rape victim.

“A stringent law has been enforced in the country following the Delhi rape case. But the punishment meted out to the accused is less. One rape incident takes place every 16 minutes in the country. Only laws are not enough to curb crimes on women. People need to change their mindset and to create

awareness among the people, more conventions like this should be organised,” she said. Writer Dr K Marulasiddappa said, “There is no need to look for the cause of the increasing number of rapes elsewhere. The society and the government are responsible. A sensitive issue like rape can only be solved by law.”
