Mangaluru: Accident prone Nanthoor junction - DC, officials inspect spot

Mangaluru, Mar 2: In the wake of the recent fatal accident at Nanthoor junction here and repeated complaints from the public, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim along with NHAI officials on Monday March 2 inspected the area and said steps will be taken to provide temporary solution.

After inspecting the junction and holding discussions with officials, the DC spoke to media persons and said, "Major accidents have occured at Nanthoor junction in recent times. In an earlier accident two youngsters lost their lives and in the recent one, three persons died.

"We have been repeatedly receiving complaints from people and people's representatives describing this as an unscientific road. Hence along with the MCC commissioner and NHAI officials have come to study the situation. We have found some issues here. We are working to provide a temporary solution.

"For a long-term solution, NHAI has already sent a Rs 60-crore proposal to the central government for an underpass, and it is awaiting approval. We have been discussing the issue with NHAI and will provide a solution soon," he added.

MCC commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati said, "Following the recent accident, we are visiting the spot today to learn the ground reality. We found that mud has accumulated near the divider and it will be cleared immediately."

"Also, there is a proposal to install a speed breaker as a temporary solution and discussions are on with the NHAI. As soon as DC directs, it will be done.

ACP (traffic) Udaya Nayak said, "There is a suggestion to shift the bus stop near the Nanthoor circle to a spot near the Ulhas bar in the area. The divider would be narrowed to make it two-lane on either side and there will be free left turn on road leading to Bikarnakatte. These are only temporary suggestions and the final solution will be only after underpass or flyover is built," he said.

    I have seen the plan for the proposed underpass at nanthoor and have discussed it with various consultants. It is only help vehicles moving from panambur to ullal side to speed up further creating new accident spots at the places where the underpass ends. Meanwhile the vehicles moving from bikarnakatte to panambur will have to battle it out with vehicles coming from kadri side to bikarnakatte. In the rainy season this underpass will be flooded and vehicles will have to move on the upper roads again. Vehicles moving from panambur to bikarnakatte will travel as usual on the main road at high speeds and more lives will be lost.
    And as far as comments below that suggest that rich landowners are putting pressure it is all false. The last proposed flyover was cancelled supposedly because MESCOM did not shift the power lines in time and when they did so, the contract to construct this flyover had already expired. People on both sides of the highway in this area have already given up a lot of land valuation over 100 crs. They have been paid peanuts as compensation. Rs.90,000 per cent of land as compensation will not allow you to buy alternative accomodation anywhere within 25km radius of mangalore.
    THis highway is not only dangerous in terms of traffic but also the pollution and dust levels are very high thus endangering the lives of people living within 1km radius from this place. So when smaller places like Channarayapatna, Navalgund, Sakaleshpura, Khanapur all have been allocated bypass roads, why is it that in mangalore the highway has to pass through the city?.Our people are not thinking of long term solutions. Except for the derebail flyover, all the other flyovers are utter flops. So the underpass proposed for nanthoor will be a utter disaster and all the money will go down the drain and the current problem will continue.

    According to most of the comments, people suggest to have a FLY over on the highway from Nanthoor to Pumpwell side, But what to do with most of the BUSES and TRUCKS RUN WITH NO BRAKES (BRAKES FAILED) in this case we would be able to see these heavy vehicles falling down from the fly over to the Ground level.HEAVY FINES AND STRICT VEHICLE INSPECTION EVERY 6 MONTHS will help solve the problem and people have no patience even if the Signal lights are installed.

    Mangalore Junctions are congested! due to Political PRessure , Community Politics in Road Widening. Surathkal Is missing Western side Service Road Due to the Benevolence of Leading Congress Leader's Ashirvaad. Collectors Gate Circle Cannot Be widened due to Prominent Politician's Ancestral Home and Too Many rich People around the Circle. Similar Nanthoor Is a Surrounded Politically and Financially Sound People who will some how manage to reduce land Widening to save their Land!. Similar Situation Thokkottu. Can We blindly Just say what ever is there from this mark on both sides will get demolished and No Court Case will be allowed. Mangaloreans Have too much extra Brains to stall all good work!
    Its Not Enough If you Widen a road or a Bridge Also Construct Foot Paths.. People when their Born learn to walk not to Drive Vehicles.

    Nanthoor cross is a very dnagerous area. I remember in 1998 after my marriage I was travelling from Moodabidri to Managlore Railway station to go to my home town, Suddently when reached this junction a truck just wizpassed our vehicle . Luckily we escaped. The inicdent still sends shivers down my spine.SOmehow with blessings of od we escaped unhurt My dad mum my borthers and my hubby were all in our SUV . God saved us.

    I opine a fly-over bridge will serve the purpose well to all rather than an underground pass-away-road.

    The police of Mangalore should have some education how to deal with the situations. Busses are always breaking the rules. Need to fine them heavily without any interference.

    Bus stop at Nanthoor also should have spacious place either should get away or replace to some other place in order to clear the way hindered by these busses in the middle of the road to other vehicular movements.

    The round about with at least 2 lanes (prefer even 4 lanes but it would be just dream)and a traffic light should solve the problem but the biggest problem is the drivers. 99.9% drivers do not know the rules of a round about and 70% drivers do not know the rule of lane system and pedestrians do not know any road rules. Unless there is more traffic education and strict licensing coupled with heavy penalties will solve the problem. In most of the European countries driver have to have insurance for the car he is driving (that means not easy to drive someone's car) and if you drive without insurance, it will be towed and you have to take taxi home and get insurance for that car and pay the fine and the keeping charges per day and in Australia if you drive without a license your car will be crushed right in-front of your eyes by a bulldozer. We need more strict rules first. Bringing Japanese/American architects does not help.

    The solution to Nanthur junction is definitely not Traffic Signal. Temporary solution is Road Humps (Speed Breakers) in four directions and Continuous Traffic Police control during peak hours.
    The permanent solution is MULTIPLE FLYPOVER.It is expensive but it is only solution.As the traffic is high, in both direction traffic should move non stop through Flyovers and local traffic should be kept at the ground level.If space is not sufficient for multiple Flyover, then underpass in one direction and Flyover in another direction will give the same result, but it will delay the project.
    Having worked with International Consultants and Contractors in Highways and Underpasses for more than 3 decades I feel this the correct solution and I hope NHAI officials will consider this option seriously.
    Once the design and budget is approved the Project should be awarded to only International companies such as Larsen and Tubro.......so that work can be finished within 2-3 years.
    I was at the scene of the Accident when it happened and seen the horror and pain of accident victims. It is absolutely horrible junction and with the amount of traffic ,many more innocent victims will be killed unless police monitor the situation continuously until permanent solution is found.

    India has the worst roads in the world..and karnataka has the worst road contractors since they are in nexus.liason with NETHASa nd Babus . APNA KITNA?
    So what you get for peanuts is monkeys...
    afetr sharing the project income to all then what remains?
    Therefore you have such Jugaad work and jugaaad road killing Innocent citizens.
    Time to invite : Japanese ... American : European Architects: designers: Planners:who can work on Master plan..mega plan ..Total infrastructure for the state and also for Mangalore city..
    then allot the contracts to large company like : L&T or Tatas or Reliance...
    Look ate the road gradient....
    It is like stone age...ancient..
    what a joke and a disaster..can we ever improve?
    can we ever be modern?
    Look every road that is built.. so
    THEDA..SO INCOMPLETE: SO ROUGH: SO UNEVEN..
    SO DANGEROUS.. SO BAD.. why?

    In our city it is usual now a days that all most all the drivers ( 2 , 3and 4 wheelers)speak over phone while driving and action by the law enforcing wing of RTO/POLICE ARE UN EFFECTIVE AND ARE VERY POOR STATE.The recent incident in which a school boy ( son of poor cobbler) was knocked down at Vishwabhavana by city bus 13B , IT IS OBSERVED THAT THE DRIVER IS TALKING OVER MOBILE PHONE

    First of all yes this is the most absurd unscientific road Mangalore ever had.
    Secondly, the proposal to build a underpass is heights of foolishness for a road that attaches to a highway. There must be a flyover, not a underpass. This will only create a bottle neck and will slow down highway traffic further.
    Thirdly, the bus stop from nanthoor must be moved away, since the buses never stop in side the bus bays at all. All buses going towards kpt can be asked to stop further up the road. The buses stopping there must stop only to and pick passengers nothing more than that. Now the drivers literally doze off there.
    Fourth, effective policing. The way Mangalore bus lobby has become a mafia of whom even the police are afraid of.
    Fifth. Daijiworld, please collect all suggestions from all the readers here and pass it on to the concerned authority and start a campaign on how the authorities are acting on the same

    REMOVE A ROUND ABOUT AND INSTALL A SIGNAL. INSTEAD OF DOING UNDER GROUND BRIDGE (CONSTRUCTION IT WILL TAKE MORE THEN 5 YEARS)SIGNALS IS A BETTER OPTION.

    Thank you for the initiative. Sincere suggestion is to propose any plans froma along term insight. Mangalore will develop in far large scale in another ten years. at least 30-40 percent increase in vehicles to drive the same roads. At least 20 percent more buildings to surround the areas, may be malls and so on.

    Suggest 4 four lane flyovers and cross flyovers at different heights to curb the traffic needs.

    Install mandatory speed breakers at every junctions to slow down the traffic.

    Propose to install CCTV cameras and few educatory digital large screens to educate the people in the junction.

    1. Please remove the circle from the junction. It is the most unscientific junction and circle in the world!! We are good in complicating the simple things because we do not have scientific approach to a problem.
    2. Mark the road from Nanthur to Pumpwell direction in three lanes.
    3. One lane to go to Bikkarnakatte side (free left).
    Middle lane to go to Pumpwell. Right lane to go to Kadri Side.
    4. After removing the circle other movements from Pumpwell and Kadri side can be simplified without having go round the circel.
    5. Install signal system as in Karavali Junction in Udupi.

    Lydia Lobo take a walk and see majority of the property and land owners are not rich. Besides these land owners or their ancestors would have taken lots of pains and made sacrifices to buy land and build their dream houses in the area. There are lots of other solutions for the current problems without acquiring further land to further widen the roadd and harassing the property owners. DC, MCC and Highway authorities and our elected representatives should focus on this issue and act fast. Even a temporary solution will take months to implement and the permanent solution another decade. This is my opinion.

    How can city admin can give permission/license to new building constructed at corner of the highway very adjacent to the road ,if this is starts functioning then life is measurable,then some more lives to be ready.
    speed limits like scientific humps must be installed all 4 sides.

    there are few zones, which are very risky! Balaipade near Udyavara, Pangala bridge, Nantoor bridge, Nitte- nandalike road, dhoopadakatte, Nandikoor adve, , Kundapura city limits, Udayavara Katapadi stretch!.... - Many accidents.. you speed up, you end! bad.. bad!

    A mandatory rule should be in place in the entire country . Getting each and every vehicle serviced every 6 months or every 8 thousand KM . If a vehicle is not serviced breaks can fail , vehicle break down issues can stop . These Officials wake up only after a 100 die .

    All three roads leading between high walls (1) going to Kadri (2) to Pumpwell (3) Bikarnakatte need to be widened to allow unhindered flow of traffic so that the junction does not get clogged. Moreover, make traffic lights applicable, not manual handling by cops. Penalize offenders heavily, repetition resulting with jail term.

    Apprehend rich owners of these properties and acquire the land. Our property ownership rights oblige us to vacate any portion of our land for public development. Discrimination and favoritism leads to loss of life.

    U seem to Always looking at only one side of the coin, u need to look at the other side as well. Road widening if it was ur property u wouldnt have comented like this. Instead of road widening Y there cant be a underpass?? so that one traffic will easily flow without any signal and one will hault for signal and proceed accordingly.Its only about traffic management and not always widening roads,will only inturn impact people who have strived hard to get that piece of land and also the no. of trees to be chopped down.

    Unfortunately we are ruled by people who are bound by unethical practices. Laws tailor made to suit their needs and we common people pay taxes make sure the country runs without issues, get harassed everyday in one or the other way. Huge corporates run the show and the ministers are just stooges.
    Life has no value, a loss for one and a news for others.

    Good move by the concerned deputy commissioner Mr. A B Ibrahim (administrative authorities) jointly with NHAI officials.
    Suggestion:
    A fast tract solution to implement a underpass with four lane traffic will be beneficial rather than a flyover.
    Temporary solution can be termed as (Short-term solution). The underpass project may be termed as a LT term project (tentatively within 60 months from now, including feasibility studies & detail engineering)

    Most of karnataka politicians have lost a progeny in a road mishap! Be it Vasant Salian, Shivaji Shetty, DVS, (i think) Janardhan poojary... but still they did nothing when they were in power for road safety!...

    Balasaheb lost his son in an accident on Mumbai - Pune road and no medical help could reach him in time and he swore that something should not happen to common man and made the grand old PUNE-MUMBAI expressway!.... not that accidents are less, but med help may reach!....

    I hope Karnataka politicos understand it..put aside their differences, atleast make quick assessment and sort out the road safety issues and make policies!... and do the needful! I am just hopeful.. not that I want any life to be lost, no matter to whom it belongs to!

    I think the best solution for this Nanthoor Junction is to have Traffic Lights or a Circle with a flyover on the National Highway.
    I presume that a circle with flyover is a good idea where the traffic on the National Highway can move on without any interruption whereas traffic from other roots can move through the circle. Note that, we do have enough space there and both options are open.

    When we approach Nantoor round about from Bikernakatte side, it does not look like we are approaching a major national highway. This is one of the weak point.
