State gets electric shock, tariff hiked by 13 paise per unit

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Mar 3: Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC), which was approached this year by electricity supply companies in the state with a request to permit hike in electricity tariff by 80 paise per unit, has permitted the hike of tariff by different rates ranging from 10 to 20 paise for domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers.

The average hike in tariff permitted works out to 13 paise, and it will come into effect from April 1. The hike will not affect people with monthly consumption of up to 100 units.

About the use of power for agriculture, the commission has asked the companies to conduct energy auditing of agricultural pump sets, in tune with demands made by farmers forums. As of now, pump sets have been spared from the hike in tariff.

For street lights and drinking water schemes, the hike permitted happens to ten paise per unit. Educational institutions and hospitals will have to shell out 20 paise more per unit. For industries, the rise is between 15 and 20 paise per unit.

These details were given by chairman of KERC,MR Srinivasa Murthy. at a press conference held on Monday March 2.

The present chairman of KERC retires this month and usually the revision of tariffs to take place in April or May onwards.

Mr Srinivasa Moorthy should have gracefully retired on his due date and should have given a opportunity to the new incumbent to find out whether the increase was really needed or not. in the interest of people.

Mr Moorthy acted in a haste just to pay his debts to the Government for his appointment as Chairman of KERC and who was allowed to officiate till the age of 65 years against normal retiring age is 60.

Government should seriously think to appoint a young officers with Electricity back ground to this important post instead of appointing retried people like Mr Moorthy who are usually compelled to give biased judgements like every time increase in tariff without going into merit which encourages the in efficiency of distribution and Supply companies like Mescom.

When Coal, Diesel prices have ped substantially in recent months, Mr MNoorthy could not get time to find this merit to lower the tariff and his decision to allow increase is really surprising and shows his inefficiency and poor knowledge in this vital matter.

People who praised AAP and blamed NaMo for similar excuses in Delhi now have courage to condemn this action in Karnataka too. But I know very well that they don’t do that since they don’t want to blame their own beloveds even for wrong doing too

    Sachchidanand,

Did you condemn BJP upon increasing petrol prices ? When BJP ruled the sate, upon hiking milk prices, supporters claimed that the increased amount goes to farmers. Well, now Electricity Supply Companies need the hike ? Didn't Modi's budget make the rich richer by giving them a tax reduction ?

Common man gaya dabbe mein - Abb bhi, thabb bhi !
