Mumbai/Beltangady, Mar 3: A youth who was on his way from Riyadh to Beltangady mysteriously went missing from Mumbai airport on February 22.

Safwan (25), son of the late Abubakker, and resident of Karpady in Puttila village here, had left from Riyadh to Mumbai by Jet Airways flight on February 21. The next day, he landed at Mumbai airport and was supposed to take a connecting flight to Mangaluru. However, after going through customs and collecting his baggage, he disappeared, leaving his baggage behind in Mumbai airport.

When he did not reach Mangaluru as expected, his worried family went to Mumbai and enquired, and came to know that he had left behind his luggage in the airport there. They then filed a complant in Sahar police station in Mumbai.

During investigation, the police found out that the CCTV at the airport had caught images of him going towards the outer auto rickshaw stand at 6.40 am, carrying a handbag. Thereafter he went missing.

It is said that Safwan's father Abubakker was killed by unidentified gunmen in Riyadh in October 2014. The investigation in this regard is still on, but there is no information yet on the gunmen, sources said. The fact that now Safwan too has gone missing has brought greater anxiety to the family. Safwan is the eldest among Abubakker's three daughters and two sons. Following his father's sudden death, Safwan's mother had insisted that Safwan return to India, sources said.

The fact that Safwan left behind his luggage at the airport has given rise to various theories. Locals expressed suspicions that someone might have kidnapped him, as, if he had wanted to run away, he would have taken his luggage along, they said.
