Bengaluru: Heavy rain, strong wind, disrupt life, inflict losses

Bengaluru, Mar 8: Heavy rain and strong wind which lashed districts like Chamarajanagara, Mysuru, Hassan,Koppal and Vijayapura in the state on Saturday March 7 left behind a trail of heavy losses and devastation.

The rain which poured in Kaveri river basin in Mysuru, Hassan and Chamarajanagar districts destroyed a large number of banana plantations. Thousands of banana trees perished in this manner. In Mysuru, a tree got uprooted, destroying a house partially. The loss of banana trees alone has inflicted losses running into several lacs of rupees on farmers concerned.

After lightning struck on Friday night in Heggada Devana Kote taluk of Mysuru district, four cows inside a cattle shed died instantly. The roofs of several houses got blown away in Srirangapatna taluk due to heavy rain and wind. Rain, thunder and lightning forced people of Yalburga in Koppal district to run helter-skelter.

It is learnt that the industry of dry grape processing, which is progressing on a large scale in Vijayapura district received setback due to untimely rain. This rain, it is expected, may prove disastrous for this activity.
