Mangaluru: 'No allegation can damage Mother Teresa's reputation'

Mangaluru, Mar 8: On the occasion of International Women's Day on Sunday March 8, 'Mother Teresa - Manaviyatheya Pratirupa' (Mother Teresa - an Icon of Humanity) public debate programme was organized at Milagres Senate Hall here.

The programme was organized by Progressive Thinkers' Forum, Mangaluru. Roy Castelino, president, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy inaugurated the programme.

Addressing the gathering, Dr B Shivaram Shetty, professor at Mangalore University said, "The Hindu religion is being reconstructed again. A few people with Hindutva ideology are creating tension in the society. Hindutva is being used by a few for selfish political gains. Mother Teresa was not only mother, she was a saint. We need to come out of the confines of religion and live a life of love, peace and harmony."

Director of St Antony's Orphanage, Jeppu Fr Oniel D'Souza said, "No malicious allegation by Mohan Bhagwat can damage the reputation of Mother Teresa. She was not restricted to any one religion, she never believed in conversation. We all need to thank Mohan Bhagwat for making us remember Mother Teresa 18 years after her death. Many children of the current generation do not even know who Mother Teresa was and now they are asking questions about her."

He further added, "Had Mother Teresa been alive, she would have replied to Mohan Bhagwat saying 'Mr Bhagwat, I love u and care for you, I will pray for you to become a better Hindu'. I really thank Progressive Thinkers' Forum for organizing this programme."

Fr Valerian D'Souza, parish priest of Milagres Church said, "Mother Teresa visited Mangaluru twice. She gave a message of love and care for each other during her visits. No power in the world can stop conversion of hearts and minds of the people of the world. She saw the image of God in the poorest of the poor. In a world where wealth was given importance, the poor were treated worse than dogs, Mother Teresa changed the mindset of the people. We all stand by her, we have to lead a life which she lived and not restrict ourselves to mere speeches."

Sunil Kumar Bajal compered the programme.

Corrine Rasquinha, White Doves founder, Gladson Jathanna, assistant professor, Karnataka Theological College, Vasudeva Uchil, I A Prasanna, president Progressive Thinkers' Forum were present.

    The comment passed by person like Bhagawat against Mother Theresa is hard to digest. When she was called as Saint of the gutter one should understand her unselfish attitude towards the poor. She understood what the creator wanted from her and she was just obeying him. Did she want any power, wealth or name? Nothing, but she just wanted to give her love & affection to the destitute, because she found Jesus in them and for the sake of Jesus she gave everything. Mr. Kejerwal chief minister of Delhi said “she is a poor soul please spare her”. The people should come out from their negative thinking otherwise whatever good things happening around them will also disturb their mind and they will immerse deeper and deeper into the self destruction.

    Mother Teressa is a symbol of sacrifice and holiness. We all must respect her. A great person indeed. I wish there were more people like her in our society.

    It so happened one day that I visited Kokatta and went to Mother Teresas tomb . When I came out a Taxi driver and a passenger were fighting outside near the road which was very close to the tomb of Mother Teresa. I intervened in between and asked the driver what happened and I just told them both,that Mother was resting in her tomb . Both of them forgot about their arguments about the money and walked apart when I offered to pay the driver on behalf of the passenger . Just realised that the word Mother Teresa was so powerful in Kokatta streets that humans feel ashamed for what they are doing in their life which is short .

    The brightness of the priceless services of Mother Teresa to the sick, poor and needy cannot be faded by the irresponsible observation of the innocent people.
    In the meantime, the people well informed and inspired by the life style of Saint Mother Teresa are obligated to follow her path to help the countless sick and needy people who have been suffering helplessly today and this act to humanity can be a big respect and gift to the great soul of late Mother Teresa.
    Almighty God needs no protection and love, tolerance and respect to humans is a great religion.
    All generations are the children of God, who has created no religion but commanded to love, live and join him at the end for the eternity, being he is the supreme judge.

    Mother Theresa was and is a Name that like a flower Rose to India.nothing and noone can spoil her Name .may her Soul rest in Peace.Ithink noone would say to her even a word when she/he stood in front of her .I dont think we wont be having such a holy Soul so soon in India.

    Majority of Indians are not foolish like Bhagawat or his supporters. This fool should never have taken the name of Mother Theresa to demean. In no way Mother Theresa’s nobility is going to get affected. She will always be respected.
