Student denied internship in Germany over 'rape problem' in India

New Delhi, March 9 (IANS): A professor from Leipzig University in Germany denied internship to an Indian male student citing the "rape problem" in India, but later offered an apology when Germany's ambassador to India intervened and suggested the professor needed to "learn more about the diverse, dynamic and fascinating" country.

The screenshots of email replies to the Indian student by professor Annette Beck-Sickinger of Leipzig's Institute of Biochemistry had gone viral on various social networking websites with many questioning their authenticity.

"Unfortunately I don't accept any Indian male students for internships. We hear a lot about the rape problem in India which I cannot support. I have many female students in my group, so I think this attitude is something I cannot support (sic)," read the screenshot of an email sent by the professor.

"Many female professors in Germany decided to no longer accept male students for these reasons, and currently other European female association are joining. Of course, we cannot change or influence the Indian society, but only take our consequences here in Europe," read another email Beck-Sickinger wrote to the student.

But soon after the German embassy in India on Monday uploaded a letter by Germany's ambassador to India Michael Steiner on its website, there was no doubt about the authenticity of the emails.

In a scathing letter to the professor, Steiner wrote: "I would encourage you to learn more about the diverse, dynamic and fascinating country and the many welcoming and open-minded people of India so that you could correct a simplistic image, which -- in my opinion -- is particularly unsuitable for a professor and teacher."

Later, Beck-Sickinger said she was sorry about the emails.

"Of course I have nothing against male Indians and I have accepted several Indian students in the past," The Huffington Post reported her as saying.

"However my lab is full and I currently cannot take any student. This led to an unpleasant discussion with one of the Indian students," she said.

If you know to blame BBC then take some courage to make a documentary on your personal cost for the women of India and the world! And if you cannot make any changes then do not make efforts to comment.

Vellano - all these years when our students studied, Germany was not a christian country huh?
The issue still remains that men(most) do not care for woman's dignity in India. The illogical outrage of men in reader's comments, shows it twice over.
India probably has the highest migrants in developed countries, why did they not return or stop migrating citing conditions that, women are safer in India?
There ought to be a limit to hypocrisy.. ugh..

you have answered yourself! what has changed, post this documentary? that lady calls everyone a rapist?
a guilty may escape the law, but no one innocent should be ever punished! - that is premise on law and justice stands! was there any issue of Indian student raping German woman student, that she was alarmed to reject it?

there is a systematic way to condemn india, and ruin its image now, as if "rapes happen daily, cultureless, poverty stricken' ... no point in investing, touring in that land! ... that was the idea here.. last 6 months ago, there was report "a big western gang, is trying to make Modi's summer difficult"! so, all this will be now little more higher tempo!

and see for yourself, how you all defended Mother Teresa, are happy here and not even defending "MOTHER INDIA" in same spirit, "Now we are not rapists"! I cae two hoots, if Germany takes or leaves few students.. I am not an aspirant, neither my family is! vhe vhe vhe

This is the effect of BBC airing rapist video. Unfortunately many congress suppoerters here failed to understand the effect of this video on India's image. They supported airing video bvecause their minister Shinde gave permission for shooting the film. It is sad that congis do not understand the nation's integrity and sovereignty.

Only we Indians will be ready to accomodate a foreigner and even are ready to accept them as PM, if need arises! NOT ALL are so! vhe vhe vhe ...so you 'so called Indian rapists' must be careful while applying! )

    Vellano1,
Hitler was Austrian, not German. BTW, Germany has the largest number of immigrants in Europe and are facing the flak for it...if you know what i mean...and talking about dictators, do you know there is a huge contingent of Sikhs settled in Mussolini's Italy since the 1990's who work in the cheese factories?
Come on man, don't generalize, there are racists in India too, who still call all south Indians as Madrasis...che, che che!

Yes, if required you will go and prove Hitler was from austrian.. but if we tell you Sonia is from italy.. " oh my god, blasphemy.. she is Indian.. she is daughter in law of country"! .... hitler ke saat church judaa tha, so that jews are finished... everyone knows it! if you consider India promotes rape culture, then you should know such things too!

Hitler was an atheist and against the church per se. He only believed in German nationalism and maintaining a pure Aryan race...don't mix Christianity with hitler.
Sonia was considered India's (first) daughter-in-law when she was married to (late) Rajiv Gandhi who was the pm then...Likewise, Godse too was India's (first) assassin who killed an Indian political figurehead ..
