Bantwal, Mar 10: Tausif, village accountant (VA) of Sajipamooda and Munnur gram panchayats in the taluk, was attacked by some persons engaged in illegal sand mining near Nandavar. The incident occurred at about 9.30 pm on Monday March 9.

During the visit of Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, Ramanath Rai, to Nandavar on Monday afternoon, some locals had complained about the continuance of illegal sand mining activity in the region unabated.

Tausif was tipped off after dusk about the illegal sand mining activity. He rushed there and saw that three trucks loaded with sand were ready for dispatch. When he asked the drivers of these trucks for licences, a person who was seated in a car nearby, pushed Tausif around and assaulted him, it is said. He also quested Tausif as to what authority he had to seek documents.

Tausif, who got admitted into a private hospital here, has filed a complaint in the town police station here about the incident. It may be recalled that the assistant commissioner and his team had raided the spot and seized truck and boats about two weeks back. This act has failed to deter the sand miners, as evidenced by the above incident.
