Bengaluru: Mayor, Deputy Mayor visit Halasuru Lake for review

Bengaluru, Mar 11: Mayor of Bengaluru N Shanthakumari and Deputy Mayor K Ranganna visited the Halasurulake in the heart of the city to review the progress of its clean-up drive and rejuvenation.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor, who were accompanied by top officers of the Bengaluru MahanagaraPalike (BBMP) along with the Opposition leader Manjunatha Reddy, directed that the Halasurulake must be beautified and developed into a model water body.

They directed the BBMP officials to take step to clean up the lake and remove all the garbage dumped around the lake to ensure that the environment was protected.

The Mayor promised to visit the Halasurulake again next week and review the progress.

Social activist and a member of Bharatinagar Residents Forum Kumar Jahgirdar explained the difficulties of the local people, especially the people using the Halasurulake for their walks, due to the unhealthy environment and non-clearance of the garbage.

    This is an annual tamasha. No permanent solution action is taken as with every such annual visit of the officials a "Contract" for removal of the debris and beautification of the surroundings is issued and it is needless to mention who benefits!! Then come festival time and the whole cycle is repeated with tonnes of flowers, banana saplings, decorations, bamboo scaffoldings and structures etc. are dumped into Halasuru lake and then a short time later there is a stinking mess which makes the residents protest...and the officials visit...etc. etc. etc.
