Mangaluru: Foreign currencies worth Rs 54.74 lac seized at airport

Mangaluru, Mar 12: Acting on credibled information, officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Mangaluru, with the assistance of customs department at Mangalore International Airport, seized a huge quantity of foriegn currency notes of different countries on the night of Wednesday March 12 and arrested a Jeddah-bound passenger.

The currency notes were seized from a passenger identified as Kamar Mohamed Moula Kadira, aged about 35 years, a resident of Manki, Honnavar.

The foreign currency seized include US dollars, more than 50,000 Saudi riyals, assorted foreign currencies like British pounds, Qatar riyals, Oman riyals, Bahrain dinars, and Kuwait dinars. The total value of the currency seized is Rs 54,74,754.

Kamar was to travel to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia via Dubai (UAE) by Air India Flight IX 813 on March 11 night.

During interrogation, Kamar admitted to the offence, after which he was arrested and produced in the court.

Further investigation is in progress.

    This man is only a courier for the havala racket that is going on still. they have contacts who meet them at their different destinations who then exchange the currencies and further pass them along. If one checks his stop over timings at dubai and other airports you will get the modus operandi of such racketeers.

    Poor man..... he might have heard the news of Goa Education Minister Atanasio Monserrate was detained at the Mumbai airport in the wee hours today for allegedly carrying unaccounted foreign and Indian currency, and no punishment was given so he thought carrying currency is not a crime. Where he know rules for Minister.MLA are differs for ordinary man.
