Bengaluru: Govt moots 29 kms tunnel on Shiradi ghat section

From Our Special Correspondent

Daijiworld Media Network

Bengaluru, Mar 12: An ambitious 29-kms tunnel on the Shiradi Ghat section is proposed to be constructed to ensure seamless travel from Kanataka’s capital city of Bengaluru to the coastal region.

The cost of this ambitious project, if it gets off the ground, is pegged at Rs 10,000 crore at present rates.’

The proposed project would be executed with the financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Public Works Minister H C Mahadevappa told reporters in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The Minister, who had discussed the tunnel project with Union Surface Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Tuesday, said that “Gadkari has assured all support to execute the project."

The State Public Works Department would prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the proposed tunnel route project and seek funding from JICA, he said.

The State Public Works Department had planned to concretise the entire Ghat stretch.

Don't fret over something which is not going to happen at least in our generation. Are we so naive to believe that the govt who can't even widen the ghat road in the past 30 years will build 29 km tunnel. If they were really serious, they could have spent few hundred crores to make a shorter route with wider road and fewer hairpin bends.

Some readers in this forum have misunderstood the purpose of building this tunnel. This tunnel is not only meant has straight road but also cut downs the distance and time has it bypasses the Ghat.Aldo some have commented that they could build 8-9 different tunnels instead of one long tunnel, to understand this you need to know the topography between Europe and here Europe has vast range of continuous mountains and passes like the Alps.Unlike Europe here when you travel to Bangalore you just come across one Ghat hence it wouldn't be logical to buold several tunnels. Its good that the Government is giving this to a Japanese company as their known to have high standards and superior technology. One more Japanese are known for is their intwgroty and honesty unlike Indian and European companies they wont give any kickbacks to the Government and wont comprise on qualitu inorder to cut down cost.

Alast some good news... But we have to wait and watch and pressurize the Govt- both state and Central to complete the dream of decades. This is absolutely required for the coastal districts which has also has so many famous temples which are visited by millions of devotees from the country and also has interests of trade and commerce.
Mr Oscar Fernandes could have easily done this work when he was minister but...? Thanks to Mr Mahadeva prasad & Nithin Kadkary in anticipation if the long pending dream comes true.

If Konkan Railway could be built, 29 kms tunnel on Shiradi ghat section is not impossible.
Our Governments, State as well as Central should have strong determination.
To reduce crude import bill, improve trade and employment, save precious time, Govt. should carry out such projects.
To achieve quick break even, and to keep low toll tax, Govt should develop tourism and sanctuaries around the area.

Central Ministry is also involved as this project will be implemented by National Highway Authority under Central Govt even though it is mooted by State Govt. Finally it may be done under Private-Public participation with Japanese Collaboration and charging heavy toll fees.

    Dear Vnayak,

We do understand all the issues U have raised here.First of all around Shiradi Ghat area, there is no power supply at all times. So how come these people can supply continuous un interrupted power supply to this tunnel. Our Corrupt Politicians & third grade contractors failed miserably to concrete this 29 KM. stretch for so many years. At the moment condition of this Ghat is very pathetic. Commuters have been put into great inconvenience.Travelling by Bus & Trains take about 12 hours to travel about 350 KM distance from Mangalore to Bangalore. U mark my words that this tunneling work will never take place during our life time. Our Politicians r only good for talking big things & giving tall promises & fooling the public. Our Politicians r incapable of clearing the Bangalore City Garbage on day to day basis. So what can U expect from our politicians.

The problem lies with the shameless literally useless politicians we have.
So much of corruption, so much of red tape, these people go to so many countries, to do research, but bring back nothing except suitcase loads of shopping for their families.
In France, if a train is late by a minute, the entire amount is refunded and the passenger gets a free ride.
We for sure will have to wait for ages to just get approval on important things.
Look at the business that happens between Bangalore and Mangalore. Even though good roads are very essential that connects two very important cities, Karnatakas biggest two economies, it is still slogging behind. Connectivity is still a long call for becoming reality

In Mangaluru the underpass near Padil was to be completed at the cost of Rs.five crores within FOUR Months only as promised by Sadananda Gowda when he laid foundation stone while he was Rly Minister.
Now seven months have passed and even half of the work is not completed even though Karnataka Govt has given their full 50% share to Rly dept. This Under-bridge will take another one year to complete. This is the efficiency of our Rly dept and their contractors for constructing a very very small underpass.
At this rate just imagine how many decades the Shiradi tunnel will take ?

Indians (except the politicians\political parties) are so gullible, after complaining umpteen times against those P\PParties for their corruption, we fall for their next talk on another big project involving 10,000 crore rupees, without any thought because these politicians keep making us "MANGAS" as and when they prefer to do so.
The fault lies with the masses for electing such politicians, keeping them on the pedestal and venerating them when they should be our elected Rep. to do our work and most of all accountable!!!
We talk abt being Congress\BJP\JDS followers and go along with the corruption they do without even batting an eyelid.
This project envisaged this year,if authorized, will take, may be another 3 years to commence and in total 10 years to complete even if only Japanese working on it, if free hand is not given to them. By the time these Japanese complete the project they will be converted by our politicians\Ministers into master crooks!!!! The cost of the project too will shoot up to double due to delays.
    Quote me when it happens....
If without interferences, a free hand is given to Japanese contractor\s, they will complete the project within three years time and with very good finish too where commuters can travel without fear through them..

First have proper plan to repair and maintain existing roads and upgrade other connecting roads like Charmadi and Bisale Ghat roads so that pressure on Shiradi ghat reduces with commuters having multiple options.

Even at the rate of 10 crores per KM it will not cross 300 crores. Consider cost escalation doubled, even should be within 600 crores. Then for big shots 100 to 200 crores each, little below 50 crores each, little below 25 crores each and so on. Grand total 10000 crores.

The most corrupt nexus of politicians, crooked contractors and NHAI Engineers, can’t even complete a mere 26 KMS stretch of the highway with latest reports indicating another 1.5 years extension, closure of the crucial road and over 200 crores cost escalation. In any other country, we would have had steel reinforced super-strong, 6-lane freeway at one 10th of the cost, completed within a fortnight, for such a small stretch of the key highway between Blr and Mangalore.

Now with this endless talk of a endless tunnel, the scam-tainted Gadkari (his driver was director in 7 firms belonging his Purti empire) will take a fully funded trip to Japan while Mahadevappa, Siddu, Kemppaiah, Oscar, Moily, Kharge and team will continue to loot the state exchequer with more such ridiculous talk and 10,000 crore projects.

    Vijay and Frederick,

I have no problem with the costs. Tunnel through the mountains is not just digging a hole and paving the road. There is a lot of infrastructure needed: Air circulation, illumination, proper hard shoulders, Concretization of roof and walls, emergency exits and tunnels at every KM, emergency phones at every KM, strict traffic signals and rules etc, etc. My problem is that Indians especially in DK can not do it. Perhaps it should be contracted to the Chinese.

Do you really need a single long tunnel or multiple short tunnels and some overbridges to straighten the road more? In Europe there are hundreds of small tunnels but only 3 or 4 long tunnels. The 29 KM long tunnel will take 20 Years even in a developed country. In India it would take much longer.

Not only funding even the : planning: designing.. and ution to be completed by the Japanese...
Total turn key as Our people are not competent ...
so, let us invite their engineers.. builders and show us how to work on projects like this one ..so this success can be repeated to shrink..connect all land locked areas of high mountain terrains in up north along Himalaya.. north eastern as also PAKISTAN front leading to Afghanistan..
let us learn the techniques and let us import all needed high tech machinery from japan and also get it mfgerd in JV with indian cos like L&T s.and let teh military garrison/ civil engineers embark on mega projects to shrink travel time across india. with underground CARGO RAIL.. Underground interstate rods for heavy duty trucks....
Also build under ground cities.. of teh future..
involve engineering/ technical colleges.. in this area.

Not Kudla or Bengaluru contractors, but from Hyderabad & Andhra. You can observe that most of the contracts uted in Karnataka since last 30 years, have gone to Telugu contractors who have opened satelite office in Bengaluru to pass on the bribe under the table to Karnataka & Delhi Politicians. Do you know that the new Ullal bridge near Thokottu is contructed by Son of YSR Reddy and delayed by three years due to his arrest by CBI.

If they were listening to our suggestions...india would have been a developed country by now! BTW the existing mlr-blr railway-tunnel train during day time take 14 hrs nearly double the prev bus time. Better to keep bus route parallel to train track as another tunnel would make shiradi ghat go boom..as it happens due to landslides on konkan rly line during rains beside damaging the fragile ecosystem of western ghats
