Bengaluru, Mar 12: Senior JD(S) leader and former law minister M C Nanaiah has tendered resignation to the post of the chairman of a 29-member expert committee, which was constituted to make recommendations on issues related to the safety of women and children.

The committee constituted in August, 2014, was expected to suggest amendments the existing laws to prevent abuse of sexual violence on women and children.

Nanaiah, former MLC, submitted his resignation letter to Home Minister K J George.

"I, for compelling personal reasons, tender my resignation to the chairmanship of the committee, to come into effect from today," Nanaiah said in his resignation letter.

Three days ago, Nanaiah said the committee would submit its report along with its recommendations to the Government in the next three months.

Increase in the incidents of sexual assault on women and children, followed by protests both inside and outside the House, prompted the government to constitute the expert committee comprising legislators, representatives of social organisations and women and children’s organisations, and legal experts.

Nanaiah had criticised the BBC for aired documentary on India’s Daughter and said it aimed at tarnishing India’s image globally, which the stand was taken by the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
