Mangaluru, Mar 13: 'The need for water is not unique to India alone. It is a global issue. To ensure that everyone gets access to water, there is no other viable option but to resort to inter-linking of rivers,' felt secretary in the union department of earth sciences, Dr Shailesh Nayak.

He was speaking after inaugurating a three-day international conference on water resources, coasts, and marine engineering, organized by the department of applied mechanics and hydraulics of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Suratkal, on Thursday March 12.

At the same time, he hastened to warn that linking of rivers is a highly complicated and elaborate issue. 'We can move ahead on this direction only after conducting exhaustive study over the pros and cons, and after practically testing the feasibility,' he felt. He also stressed that the focus should not be towards addressing immediate issues, but to envision every plan by keeping in mind requirement for the next 50 years. He felt this conference can moot many thoughts, debates, and comments on the plans of the central government.

He also said that the nations may have to go in for extracting minerals buried deep under the oceans as the treasure of several minerals like nickel and cobalt found beneath the earth surface are getting exhausted. 'For this, new technical inventions are needed. There is a concept of turning seawater into fresh water but water pollution needs to be checked to maintain quality of water. We need to maintain seashores clean, and enrich underground water table,' he opined.

Prof Usha Nateshan of the water resource centre of Anna University, Chennai, felt that it need not come as a surprise if third world war is sparked off on the issue of water share. She felt that there is a need to think of plans which can provide water to everyone as per their needs.

Prof A Kandaswamy of NITK presided. Dr Subba Rao welcomed. Prof Dwarakish delivered introductory address.

    Even the black money didn't land, but joining the rivers of India became the hot topic now.

    Let some other politicians may start talking connecting Nile river with river Ganges. Cheap great talks!

    400 million people living with less than $ 1.25/day, introducing some massive micro-financing programs to raise their deprived standard of living is not an issue for the new Government of India but talking about many impossible Himalayan projects and dreams became the daily routine.

    Interlinking of Indian rivers was the brainchild of one Arthur Cotton during British rule in India. But to implement a project of this magnitude involves a astronomical amount of finance and other resources not to mention the ecological, environmental impacts and displacement of population. If a similar scheme were to be implemented in China, they would’ve reaped the benefits by now, but in a democratic set up such as ours, convincing various social agencies with the long term benefits of this project, taking opposition political parties into confidence is a herculean task.

    He is actually contemplating to scuttle the "cleaning" of Ganga if there is a plan for inter-linking rivers in India. It will be unnecessary double expense (any reason should be given for not keeping his promise to clean Ganga)

    It was people's mistake to believe in whatever Modi\BJP announced during election rallies.
    Election rallies are to make false promises and without fail voters believe in them.
    Later everywhere "U" turns by the elected Government and it's PM.
    Modi brought this inter-linking topic during rallies.
    He should now give the go ahead for studying the feasibility of Inter-linking of Indian rivers which if started now and completed in years to come, will be his baby and he will be remembered\praised for it!!.
    Wonder if he is interested to be remembered by...Here his corporate friends can assist him for their benefit if project materializes.

    River Ganga has to merge with Yamuna and flow south linking Narmada, Godavari, Krishna, Cauvery, Periyar and finally into the Indian Ocean if we want India to be a land flowing with milk and honey …

    River Ganga is already connected to Yamuna. In fact, Yamuna is the biggest tributary of Ganga.

    Why finally all rivers to Indian ocean? Then what is the fun in connecting rivers. Let them get conencted to Arabian sea or bay of Bengal as what is happening now to excess water if any.

    The merged Ganga Yamuna entity at Uttarakhand will flow south into MP connecting all Indian Rivers.
    Following are the benefits:
    1. India will be drought free nation.
    2. Holy water Ganga will be available on the tap in all households across India.
    3. Only excess water will flow into the Arabian Sea or Indian Ocean.

    Water is one of the "panchabhutas"as told in the "Vedas" requried for the life cycle survival on the earth. That is the reason atmost importance was given in the past for conserving water. Kings use to construct big big tanks to collect rain water what is at present known as "Water harvesting". But thousands and thousand of tanks are converted as sites by the land maphia/land graberes to meet their petty financial/selfish ends. If we want to conserve water we should immedietly stop this greediness of so called land developers irrespective of their caste creed, political affiliation ruthlessly. The persons involved in these activities should be awared with rigirous imprisionment for at least 10 years and their entire property should be confiscated, so that others do not muster courage to go for such illegal activites. Even the Officials who support these land grabbers should not only be removed from services, but also should be awarded with long term rigorou imprisonment. We should educate and stop common man from spoiling the catchment area land and river water by dumping the garbage.
    There should be proper management of waste in the towns mega cities and villages, so that not only menance of garbage is effectively faced but also this can be used for energy manufacturing and bi-product as manure for agriculture purpose also. Hard waste can be recycled. The concept of "Joining the riveres" which started during Shree VAjapayee period should gain momentum. This will reduce the cost of fuel to 1/3 as also cost of transportation. All the political partys should not think from their party petty benefits. It should be made as National Agenda. However a deep study on this aspect to ensure that minimum land is acquired, farmers are not effected griviously by this and they should be compensated adaquately for the loss of land by various mesures i.e by giving compensation in jobs, appointment, finance of purchase of land, construction of resi buildings farm houses.

    If they take action against land \lake grabbers and imprison them for 10 years at least, then most of the State Governments will be bared of most of the Ministers\babus etc. and many of the politicians will be behind bars.
    Do you think BDA, KIADB and such organisations do not know what is happening to our State owned\Government owned land?
    When the fence is eating the grass where is question of arresting\taking back illegally acquired land? Are they blind when multi storied residential or office building cropping up on Tank Beds and on Government land and no action taken by these authorities or demolition ordered?
    Why Government\law department is not initiating action against the culprits\land sharks??
    Simply because all this is done by the Ministers\politicians themselves.
    It is useless shout by the people for action against such people unless masses join hand and agitate...

    To solve bigger problems, we have to take up smaller problems.
    I think, water scarcity is a bigger problem, Govt need to take remedial actions before it is too late and our crops and water reservoirs are dried up.
    We can't dig Well, when thirsty. Govt need to take the right steps in right time.

    Now ganga-yamuna and few other localized rivers polluted...if this happens krishna, tunga, zuari kaveri,kabini,netravati all will get polluted.Better not

    I agree with your view that linking rivers will destroy the environment especially the aquatic life in these rivers.

    Next what i want to tell you is that we humans are moving towards attaining TYPE 1 civilization status. So we humans will go on to control most of nature in the future. It may be hard to comprehend now but its all possible.

    Rain harvesting is only method that can alleviate the water shortage faced by India.
    Interlinking rivers is not feasible & needs huge investment as well as logistic problems, which only will help big industrialists as the cost of the project will be recovered from the end users.
    Water might become private bidders property. More people will lose their land as the Democleas sword hangs on land owners with the new bill in Parliament.
    Pollution from one part of India will get transferred to all the parts along with disease causing pathogens, bacterias & viruses with pandemic of epidemics.
    Many Corporations will be interested in the project to get billions of Dollars at stake, governments will get kick backs from these is a sure bet.
