Puttur, Mar 15: Shreemathi (29), a resident of Bellichadavu in Eshwaramangala of Nettanige Mudnoor village in the taluk committed suicide at her home on Saturday March 14. Before ending her own life by consuming poison, she poisoned her daughters, Ashitha (5) and Nishmita (3) by feeding a poisonous substance to them.

Shreemathi, who was shifted to the Puttur hospital in critical condition, died there later. Conditions of both her children, who are undergoing treatment at Wenlock Hospital at Mangaluru, continue to be critical.

Shreemathi had married Rajesh from Moodigere in Chikkamagalur district about seven years back. Even after marriage, she continued to stay at her parental home with children. Rajesh, employed in Hassan, used to visit his family in Eshwaramangala once a week.

The police have ruled out financial crisis as a reason for the mass suicide attempt. The rural police here, who have taken up investigation into the case, said that family issues were behind this tragedy. Rural police inspector, Anil Kulkarni, is leading the investigation.

The younger brother of Shreemathi, who is employed in a foreign country, had returned to his native place a week back. On Saturday, Shreemathi consumed poison and also fed poison to her two children in a shed located in the courtyard of her home. Her mother, who works as Anganwadi assistant, was away at work when the incident happened.
