Mangaluru: Is school's image more important than my daughter, asks distraught mother

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (CLP)

Mangaluru, Mar 15: The parents of the child who was sexually assualted allegedly by the driver of a school van on Sunday March 15 demanded justice for their daughter and said that they were highly disappointed by the lack of response and support from the school management.

The three-year-old child, and LKG student of Mangalore One school, was sexually assualted on Friday March 13, allegedly by Madhukar Shetty (35), the driver of the Omni van belonging to the school.

Addressing a press meet organized by Samyukta Muslim Jamath, DK district at the hall of Central Muslim Committee in Bunder here on Sunday, former mayor Ashraf who is also the president of the Jamath body, said that the parents of the child came to him seeking support in the matter, and he immediately held a meeting with leaders of the community and some associations to discuss the issue.

He alleged that the school had refused to cooperate with the parents and warned them not to bring police into the issue. "Even after 48 hours of the incident, no proper action has been initiated against the accused. When the parents when to the school, the management asked them not to bring police into the matter as it would spoil the reputation of the school. When the parents insisted that case has to be filed against the driver, the management warned them that they would file complaint against the parents for creating chaos in the school," he said.

"The management told the parents to file a complaint on their own outside and said they do not want police to visit the school. We strongly condemn this as the school did not support the parents when they were in need," he added.

He also claimed that the school van in which the sexual assault allegedly took place was tinted, and that the school driver was drunk at the time of the incident.

"When rape cases are increasing, schools have to provide adequate security to students. The van was fully tinted and screened. The driver was drunk while dropping students to their homes on the day of the incident," he said.

He also lamented the lack of response from the state government to the issue. "The state government has not spoken anything on this issue. The chief minister was in the district yesterday (Saturday March 14, at Puttur) but neither he nor the district incharge minister has spoken on it, which is hurting our sentiments. We demand the district administration to speak out on this issue and take suitable action against the accused."

He further said, "The medical report by Lady Goschen hospital has confirmed the sexual assault, but the police are not disclosing it to the public. In order to communicate the status of the case to the public, the police should disclose the contents of the report. When we approached the hospital, they refused to let us see the report and said it has already been given to the police."

He also appealed to the public not to give communal colour to the incident. "Please do not bring religion into this issue. This is matter of a child's life and justice needs to be done."

Referring to the tension that prevailed in Ullal and Thokkottu after the incident came to light, he said, "A crowd gathered in front of the hospital in Thokkottu and there was lot of chaos, because they felt that as the victim is from a Muslim family, police will not take action. However, in Lady Goschen hospital premises the same night, the police took adequate measures and nothing untoward happened.

"We demand that the administration takes suitable action against the school management and that justice is done to the child. If not, we will organize a massive protest in the coming days," he warned.

Mother of the child Zareena was in tears as she addressed the press meet.

Describing the events of the fateful day, she said, "Normally my child comes home by 1 pm as she has only half day school, but that day she came late. She was dull, not eating and sleeping on my shoulder. I felt something was wrong, so I immediately called the school to enquire, but they did not give any information. At around 3.30 pm my daughter wanted to go to the toilet and I saw that she had wound on her thigh and she was bleeding. I knew something was wrong and when I asked her, she told me what the driver had done to her, but she could not explain properly as she herself did not understand it. She said the driver stopped the van at the roadside somewhere and did something bad to her.

"When I went to the school along with my husband to ask about the matter, the management refused to talk to us and told us not to bring police to the school as it would spoil their image. They refused to file complaint against the driver. Is the image of the school more important than my daughter?" Zareena asked.

When asked what the school had to say about the injury to her daughter, she said, "Somebody at the school said she got minor bruises from a plastic chair but she was perfectly fine and was playing after that."

Zareena too alleged that the driver of the school van was drunk at the time of incident, and so also later in the evening when he was asked to come to the school.

She further said that the school has made no efforts to contact her. "The school officials said that when they went to Lady Goschen hospital they were not allowed inside, but this is not true as everyone was allowed. I did not receive any calls from the school management, and whatever information I have been getting is through some teachers and staff.

"I want justice for my daughter. Today it is my daughter, I do not want this to happen to other children," she said.

Father of the child Mohammed Rafiq, vice-president of Akhila Bharat Beary Parishad Hameed Kudroli, president of Madoor Jumma Masjid Aziz Madoor and others were present.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Mangalore One school's website was hacked but later restored.

Kind words from you Mr Diwakar. If you cannot support the cause, its better you don't contribute your advise Coz this page is to support the family and not discourage them.what medical reports are you talking about? You claim the family is lying?lie for what? And how could a 3 year old possibly explain an assault to her mother unless she has experienced it.shame on you for trying to cover this up. The school and the driver should be brought to justice ,and I'm sure majority of Hindu, Muslims n Christian parents will join together n ensure that sex offenders are not allowed to walk freely in the society.I just hope that he gets the maximum punishment, maybe a death penalty.

If the police tries to protect the accused and the school management, let there be a huge protest. let this be the biggest protest Mangalore has ever seen. I'm sure Hindus and Christians will join too, just like everybody joined hands for protesting against Delhi rape - no one looked at the religion of the victim then. After all, it is this innocent child now, but if we encourage such behavour and cover up, it could be anybody's. Let there be a massive protest. Let's join hands. And shut down the school and put the management behind bars for attempting to destroy evidence

Why has the school Management been let off scot free? Clearly, there was a cover up attempt. Blatant lies were told earlier to cover up the rape, and the school surely should be held accountable. Any school that tries to hush up a rape of an innocent 3 year old doesnt deserve toe xist. It is time the ex-DGP who runs this school from hell be questioned and held behind bars for his role in the incident

@Divakar Shetty - it is sick perverwts like you who have made the city the wretched place. A 3 year old complains of rape, evidence is clear, and you have doubts because she doesn't belong to your religion. If your daughter, or niece, or anyone close to your family complains of the same, I hope you will ask her too why she is in "such a hurry over this matter". It is because of people like you that the school management can brazen it out like this - for there are always sick people who will believe stories if manipulated by religion. There is life beyond religion. I hope you understand it now, let's hope you don't have to wait for the day such a tragedy strikes you too

The mother is hurt. We should relate to her feelings and justice must be done.

The baby is barely 3 years old does not deserve the trauma. She deserves complete justice.

Now that the medical reports confirm sexual assault on the baby, police should take actions without prejudice.

The school management, since they are worried about their reputation, should be taught a lesson. Parents should stop sending their children in response to the Management's decision to cover the issue till they acknowledge their mistake. Let the school management come out in public and tender an apology. Let them understand that their school is irreversibly damaged in terms of reputation. Forever.

Can we be objective here please? Instead of asking what is BD, VHP, PFI and CM doing?

Should we be worried about our kids or political agenda??

Very sad to hear first about the assault on a small child from van Driver, second denying or not wanting to admit from schoolauthorities. The mother has right.Normally the School had to take the Driver into Task ,but they think their Image of School is important.I ask do they have any when they dont take any responsibility?when they argue child was hurt in School, their duty was to inform parents and treat child taking to doctor. They did not do.so dear parents, please take a lawyer and file case on School for not taking Action.never mind when they file case on you, because of Reputation.when reputation is there they would ask Driver and immediately call Police and it was their duty to do.Even animals also are not harming a small kit,or their calve, lamb.but here a human had gone to a ashaming stage ,without respecting its Age.what a difference!you should take a lawyer,it will not help otherwise.is he still driving van.?be careful about other children.Does he not having children,or married? They are taking your Money for fees or van?and this arguements?dont let it go.wish your child all the best.admit that child elsewhere where more safty is there.

Since this has happened in Mangalore, let us together put pressure on the govt., MLAs and MP so that the culprit is arrested and chargesheet to be submitted on fast track. Courts should deliver the judgement soon.
    Mr. Khader, listening?
The rapist should not exist by the time this little girl joins school.

Its incorrect to judge/assess rape incidents on religious basis. A rapist is a beast, no matter what is his religious belonging.

Our fight against female abuse should be undiscriminating because tomorrow it could be our own daughter, sister, mother or wife.

Rapists and terrorists are of same nature - none should be forgiven.

You people need the slightest excuse to bring religion into everything. Even the victims parents have appealed not to give the crime a religious color. We must support them and appeal for extraordinary punishment and fast track court for justice. I appeal for banning all internet porn websites and material as well as vulgar magazines or advertisements or vulgar scenes in movies and Television. This is the prime cause of all this. Small children are getting addicted to internet and then internet porn. Some parents in Mumbai have already started sending their children to de-addiction centers.

    @Ijaz Ahmed, Jaimini,
Here we should not look at the culprit as a hindu or victim as a muslim. This fight is between the rapist and victim. I hope Hindu community (except Sanghis) never support his heinous crime. Let us include all the communities to fight against this and give justice to the child and her parents. Regarding media, when such a incidents happens we have to inform without any hesitation to the state and national channels like TV9, Times Now, NDTV, Aaj Tak etc. because some times they are limited to the main cities only like Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai etc. and they are not reaching all the corners or rural areas of the country. By spreading such a news to all over the country, it will help the victim to get the justice fast.

Please support 3 YEAR old child without looking at religion.

1.When Nirbaya was gang raped in Delhi bus, whole country supported her..It became Intl news.Sonia Gandhi and co visited her parents.

2.When Keralite Medical student was gang raped in Manipal,Home Minister himself visited victim, there were rallies throughout Manipal and Udupi district condemning the rape.

3.When six year old little girl was raped in Bangalore School again whole Karnataka was behind poor girl..There was immense pressure on Siddaramaiah Govt.

Now, why can't we support this poor child and parents ? Because she is a Muslim ? Let me tell you, if we hindus don't support her at this crucial time, then there is not much difference between rapist and us..That Bast..d injured her body..we hurt her mentally..both are equally bad..(gaaya maaya bahudu, aadre gayada kale sayuva tanaka irutte)..Aa maguvina shaapa namma mele beeluva modalu, naavu yechettu kolla beku..ee heenaya kritya vannu khandisi pratibhatisi...

Note: As medical test proved that child was raped, strict action must be taken against rapist and Management who supported rapist..Here,media plays important role..Media can give justice by publishing impartial news..
