1.22 lakh Delhi women fined for not wearing helmets


New Delhi, March 17 (IANS): A staggering 1,22,523 women two-wheeler riders in the national capital have been fined by the Delhi traffic police in the last six months for not wearing helmets.

"Wearing of helmets by women riders and pillion riders is compulsory in NCT (National Capital Territory) of Delhi. Delhi Police is strictly enforcing the mandatory use of helmets for women riders and pillion riders," Minister of State for Home Affairs Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

In a written reply, Chaudhary said regular road safety campaigns were undertaken by Delhi Police to promote mandatory use of helmets by women.

Press advertisements have also been released in leading newspapers for guiding women riders and pillion riders, he added.
