Mangaluru, March 18: AIMIT, St Aloysius College, Mangalore hosted the Management Development Programme on ‘Unrelenting Innovation’ successfully for CEOs, managers and corporate with Dr Gerard Tellis, author of ‘Unrelenting Innovation’ stealing the show with his inspiring inputs.
The programme conducted by the B-school of St Aloysius College (autonomous) on March 16, 2015 at the Management and IT campus, Aloysius Institute of Management and Information Technology (AIMIT), Beeri. It was aimed at equipping entrepreneurs and corporate executives with a tool for innovation to sustain organizations with unrelenting innovation. The resource person, Dr Gerard Tellis from Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California, Los Angeles facilitated a day-long workshop with impelling inputs.
The Management Development Programme (MDP) was inaugurated with a meaningful ceremony at 10.00am in the MDP Centre at AIMIT. Dr Tellis along with Fr Denzil Lobo SJ, rector, St Aloysius Institutions and Fr Pradeep Sequeira SJ, administrator, AIMIT flagged off the event by lighting the lamp. Fr Lobo introducing the resource person, dwelt on length on the research excellence of Dr Tellis and the global recognition that he has earned through his spirited academics exploits. Dr Tellis presented the first autographed copy in India, of his book ‘unrelenting innovation’ to Fr Lobo during the inaugural.
In his first session, Dr Tellis dwelt upon the ‘incumbent’s curse’: why firms fail at the peak of their success? Quoting vivid examples corporate world which failed at their peak point in business, he pointed towards the reason of ‘failing innovation culture’ for the downfall of the dragons. He further enumerated the traits of successful companies presenting instances of unrelenting innovation from global business leaders. He hearkened the call for asymmetric response to trying out innovations in organizations ie strong rewards for success and weak penalties for failure, and not vice-a-versa.
The group discussions that followed provided a platform for the corporate participants to interact with each other and evolve a consensus on the need for innovation. The participants proposed reasons as to why companies fail to cannibalize their successful products and thus fail to survive in the competitive global market.
The guiding session post-lunch provided the templates for fitting various types of innovations in the global business environment. The participants churned their minds to present future innovations that could change the existing scenario in the market driving several ‘built to last’ organizations into non-existence. Dr Tellis expressed his happiness over the innovations of the participants and complemented the participants on the fruitful work.
The programme was brought to a close on a contented note to have travelled the path of exploring breakthrough innovation. At the valedictory, Fr Pradeep Sequeira SJ presented Dr Tellis with a memento as token of gratitude and appreciation. The participants from over 20 corporate houses and institutions across Mangaluru and Bengaluru took part in the event and walked home with a grateful heart and complementary copy of ‘unrelenting innovation’ autographed by Dr Tellis in their presence. The complementary copies of the book were sponsored by Allan Shenoi, Los Angeles, who is the son of Arthur Shenoi, a distinguished alumnus of St Aloysius College. Preethi Fernandes and Rayan D’souza organized the entire event along with the members of the MBA faculty and the students.
