'Shameful attacks on Christians send the world wrong message'

New Delhi, Mar 19 (IANS): What stops a prime minister like Narendra Modi, who has a strong mandate, to put a full stop on attacks on Christians in India, ask community leaders in the country, adding that it sends a wrong message to the world about India.

"It seems that nobody is interested in stopping attacks on Christians in India. Prime Minister Modi has a strong mandate and he can stop it just by sending a stern message to anti-Christians," Father Savari Muthu, spokesperson of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI), told IANS.

There has been a sense of unrest and anxiety among Christians after attacks on churches, schools and other community institutions across the country. The prime minister himself strongly condemned the attacks said his government would ensure the right of every citizen to "retain or adopt" any religion.

Muthu said fundamental groups are accusing Christians of "all sorts of things" and must be controlled as Christians are also Indians.

"I was shocked to read in newspapers that some Hindu fundamentalists, reacting to the nun's rape (in Nadia, West Bengal), have accused the community of sexually exploiting nuns," he said, adding that it was disgusting to make such "insensitive comments".

The comments of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat against Mother Teresa have also added to the growing unease among the community.

John Dayal, spokesperson, United Christian Forum for Human Rights, said: "The RSS has made it clear that they do not recognize Christians and Muslims as Indians."

Asked if he feels the government has made any effort to control the situation, Dayal told IANS:, "Modi has not only made no effort to control or deactivate the Sangh Parivar, which is the main force behind the campaign against Muslims and Christians, by not naming and shaming them, he is encouraging them."

Meenakshi Singh, vice president of the National Federation for Christian Unity, wondered if the rising attacks on Christians and the controversial statements by right-wing fringe element "could be a political conspiracy" against Modi the government.

"The attacks on the peace-loving community could be a political conspiracy," Meenakshi Singh told IANS.

"I wonder why Christians are being targeted ever since the BJP-led government took over last year. It was fine, barring one or two such incidents in the country, but things have gone out of control after Modi took over," she said, adding that this could also be orchestrated by elements who want to project the ruling party in a "bad light".

"You never know what is the purpose...otherwise why would anybody attack us," she asked, describing the Nadia incident was "shameful".

"It's shameful for every major political party in the country, and attacks on the community must be stopped as it sends a wrong message to the world about our country," she said.

In a recent attack, an church under construction in Haryana's Hisar town was vandalized by a right-wing group. In the shocking incident in Nadia, a 71-year-old nun of a Rangaghat convent school was raped by one of a group of seven dacoits on March 14.

Chandigarh-based Bishop Younas Massey said that "persecution of Christians must be done away with as it unnecessarily vitiates the atmosphere".

"Nationality cannot be determined on the basis of religion. The attackers are not only harming the Christians but creating a serious constitutional crisis," Massey told IANS, and urged the central government to nab the culprits at the earliest.

Bishop P.P. Marandih of the Patna diocese said that attacks on Christians in India was a clear cut case of the "strong attacking the weak".

"It's like jungle rule; there you have the weak being killed by the strong. I think it's the same thing going on here," Marandih told IANS and hoped that "everything will be normal soon as it was all senseless".

    Dear Mathew,
I don't want to dig into the past.I want to ask few questions related to the present situation. If christian community really want to spread the Love\Peace around the world they can still do it with out converting the people. But you see now a days you are seeing stiff resistance from Hindus to hidden agenda of Missionaries and some time its going out of control. Now one should understand what is causing this unrest and according to you if peace and sharing love is the main agenda then why we are seeing all this incidents?Hindus are peace loving people and we welcomed all religion and gave shelter and allowed them to live peacefully. But in turn what we got? Terrorists?Anti- nationals?Converters?Do you think you will keep quite if someone try to play with the religious sentiments of this country? If somebody thinks that they can do what ever thy want by using the money power then we believe in our unity and strength to overcome that obstacles.I request not to indulge in one activity which creates unrest.Thank you...

Mr. Mathew, You are sounding the horn for India's doom based on the sole fact that Indian's are not appreciating missionary work. Let me clarify a few things here for you. The missionary agenda is to propagate their faith in order to get 'god's message' across. This is with an assumption that all other belief or god/god's are false?. Correct me if I am wrong here. If I am wrong then why preach in the first place, let people live the way they want to?.
    - Missionaries typically start Schools, Hospitals, orphanages which I fully agree is an altruistic idea but the hidden agenda is to get into the societal fabric so that people like you can brag that we gave you these establishment. I do not see you thanking the local population / king or government who provided the land as donation and also the permission to start them. Will you ever state that the 'Hindu Rastra' provided for the missionaries to establish. Even, Historically the missionaries interacted with the kings or in some cases worked with the Portuguese to get the local king to sign a pact to allow conversion in his kingdom, for reference read about the Sonda kings of Karnataka.
    - Missionaries reached out to Mahatma Gandhi in Africa in a bid to convert him before he could come back to India so as to speed up their Indian ambition.
    - Same attempt was done with Vivekananda.
I can go on based on my view of the missionary agenda and this will not get any support from my people who have turned. However, you are quick to state that we have to ignore the wrong doings of the Portuguese. How about fixing the wrong as opposed to forgetting it. What about allowing the current situation to grow for another 500 years and then preaching the same that we need to forget the past?. This is the attitude that is hateful from your end. Do the wrong thing for your benefit and then preach about forgetting the past.
Let me leave you with a bit of advice, don't hold your breath wishing that India will die.

    - Can truth contradict?

"I do not see you thanking the local population / king or government who provided the land as donation and also the permission to start them."
    - We thank the people and the government for giving us a place. But our thanks are also viewed as hidden agenda. In fact everything we Christians do is viewed as a hidden agenda!
    - You must also recognize that the land was not yours or ours to begin with - It was God's. God allowed these rulers and kings to come to power.
    - Just as God can put these rulers and kings to power, he can take them out instantly.

"Missionaries reached out to Mahatma Gandhi in Africa in a bid to convert him before he could come back to India so as to speed up their Indian ambition"
    - The message of Christ is given to everyone - rich, poor, small, big, black, white, etc.

"don't hold your breath wishing that India will die"
    - God decides when and what happens.
    - We Christians pray for both our Christian and non-Christian brothers and sisters.
    - If it is one thing you must pray and wish for, it is to be in a state of grace when you meet God.

Mr. Sampath: 2000 years back, 12 very ordinary people, mainly the fishermen-socially disliked tax collectors-Luke who was a physician these people started the journey of faith life and went to Europe-Africa and Asia out of them one person named St. Thomas went to India and the neighboring countries and preached the good news or the gospel and healed the sick. You can see the burial ground of St. Thomas at St. Thomas mount in Chennai.

Sir, please ask yourself, how these totally poor people got the followers? They had no silver or gold, even their food was given by somebody. Did they force somebody or any allurement method to get followers?

Please tell me, among the newly found Christian converts, how many of them have a real change of life in the positive direction like stopped fight-drinking-drug consumption and other violent lifestyle etc. Did you see them as terrorists after the conversion?

You will naturally tell your relatives and close friends about the job opportunities in some parts of the country or abroad, indeed you are sharing the good news to help them, is that wrong?

Do you think it is wrong for anybody to tell the good news to other people that JESUS CHRIST can change lives? Now, please ponder about the question you have asked me.

Rape is heinous crime against women which needs to be severely condemned & concerned authorities must bring the guilty to book......But why attach religion to a crime??......Why call it a Christian women rape??....Shall we start classifying all crimes by the religion of the victim??......who is communalizing now??.....We can understand Mamata trying to give a communal twist because she knows her administration is inefficient to find the culprits, but why are religious leaders indulging in open communalization??................
Think of this....there was another rape reported in WB just two days later of a 70 women..... only some local media reported it.....why these priests aren't shouting about that??....is it a lesser crime than the earlier one or their concerns are reserved only for Christian women & not all women.........All priests & Fathers must act in a matured way & condemn the crime against the women & not paint a color to the crime & try to take mileage out of this.......

Mr. Modi has clear mandate from the people of the country, which include all communities and sections of society. And this mandate was for development, economic progress and to bring about a dramatic change in the country. I personally supported BJP this time and like me there are thousands from my community, if not lakhs, who voted for Mr. Modi believing that "ache din" will definitely come. Now why should BJP think it cannot survive without the backing of RSS, VHP or BD? The Party should realize that they have won with support from all sections of society and not solely with the backing of fringe communal groups. It's high time they stop appeasing or bowing before communal groups and the take appropriate action against criminals. If peace and communal harmony is not maintained in the country, it will definitely send a wrong signal across the globe, and foreign investors will think twice before investing in the country.

It is totally wrong to say that all Hindus are blamed. The vast majority of the Hindus in the Southern States of India are highly appreciative of the education and medical care they got in the Christian Institutions. If the Portugese have used physical force to convert people to Christianity, that bygone unethical act was not preached by JESUS CHRIST so you will have to forget those things to have peace of mind. I have read in some book that Sri. Morarji Desai became anti-Christian due to the fact that he was forced to narrate the 'Lord's prayer" while studying at the Wilson college in Mumbai. Simply see that the Wilson college was named after the missionary John Wilson, who was the key player in establishing the current Mumbai University, which is one of the oldest like the Chennai and Calcutta Universities.

The number of leading non-Christians politicians-scientists-movie stars etc who got education in the Christian Institutions are standing with the persecuted minority Christians without making big sound now but they will be forced at one point to make a solid decision to speak out the truth openly.

Sir, let these illiterate goons may march backward taking the Hindu religion into Sathi and the mistreatment of women, low class people etc. Probably, that might be the beginning of a new national religious reformation in India like the great people did such as Rama Krishna Parama Hamsa and Swami Vivekananda etc etc.

This highly dangerous march of India will not go forward like this much longer.

Even in the democratic countries, indirectly religion will play some role in politics.

When the Catholic John F. Kennedy was the Presidential candidate, the denominational issue was popped up to a milder degree, however since the U.S. electorate could overlook that, thus John F. Kennedy was elected. I do respect him greatly, he was one of the greatest Presidents of the U.S., though not acted like a very religious person but in reality he was a deeply GOD fearing person.

Out of the 7.3 billion world population, 2.3 billion Christians and 1.6 billion Muslims, and 800 million Hindus.

Mr. Modi's tight lipped attitude while the defenseless minority Christians were attacked in India through a perverted diabolical spirit by the jobless street rowdies of India, that is being watched by the whole world.

    - Converted Christians are those who follow Jesus Christ
    - Read the parable of the sower in Matthew 13 if you have time
    - Christians have to pick up the cross and possibly even die in martyrdom if they want to follow Jesus

"But still want to expand by converting ?"

There might be their (instigators) hidden agenda for certain reasons but in realty at the end of the day it’s all about politics.
In current high tech world, India is not far behind to USA, as far as lightening communication is concern. The instigators are very much aware but I don’t think they will pay attention to the concerns of any country across the globe. Whole world is burning now. Each and every country is meddling in their own problems. The equation now is, like, if you criticize me, I have much more things to criticize you. I don’t think any country raise voice except USA that too they have to think about their self-interest first.

Sam, first of all what teaching are you talking about, we don't have a 10 commandments like you do, why do you assume that all religions are of the same format. Do you understand what spirituality as opposed to an institutionalized religion ?. Don't preach and point to your book or it's contents anytime you want to push an agenda. I and several others don't care for the magic man in the sky and we don't fear him in any fashion. I hope you understand this point. If you are scared of your god then it is your bad.

In God's creation, the human beings are the most important and superior creation GOD gave control of everything under the command of the human beings and created everything for their consumption. How many kinds of oranges and apples are in the world?

But, very surprisingly, the human beings in India have no value (except the powerful and rich), and let them die in the streets hungry and sick, who cares let the animals of India run over the human beings.

Can we defend ourselves if a bunch of monkeys or bulls are attacking us? If we kill them in many parts of India, we will be in serious trouble and we will be killed by the human beings.

    Where we are headed?

In Mumbai, the beef price was Rs. 120/Kg and mutton price Rs. 500/kg and the chicken price around Rs. 180/KG.

I am not questioning those believers in the Holy Cow, that is their personal right but imposing that on other people is totally an autocratic religious repression.
This news from the largest democracy of the world will be creating surprising shocks around the world.

If the Government of India is importing beef from other countries for the consumption of the tourist, what a terrible contradiction is that?

They can eat beef in India from other countries, but the Indians can't eat beef in India!

The Indian born minority religious people and their growing children are prohibited to consume beef without fear at this low price but now millions of people in the State of Maharastra are forced into hunger through imposing religion on food yet millions of ordinary poor people are going to be jobless thus religion is pushing the millions into poverty.

Indeed, GOD loves to watch the hungry and dying people?????????????????????????????

The State of Haryana will be getting double favor over the State of Maharastra due to doubling the prison term upto 10 years.

Instead of blaming our government can we all people of all religion give some nice ideas here as to safe guard our society and the people around. We are fighting here as if we know each other. Some exceptional sit on the stage and pass on hatred and we sit at home and comment on the articles and create hatred. FUNNY PEOPLE. People of all religion are equally prone to crimes like rape. It is not that only 70 years old Christian nun was raped, after that there were two other cases where elderly women have been raped in WB. But they did not get media attention.. thats all.

Media too gives importance to stories from minority community like the one cooked up day light kidnapping story in Mangalore.

Where was RSS when there was need of education and health care for the down-ridden class of people.
Don't forget the people who taught how to dress up and how to talk and face the world.Thousands of Indians are offered jobs around the world because the Christian community schools are responsible in teaching foreign languages at a affordable price to the poorest in this country.
They had no agenda of conversions but they wanted to spread the religion within the parameters of constitution.
If someone liked the religion it is because of the charity work and peaceful nature of the community.
You had no problems all these years because right from MP,MLA,Lawyer,Doctor and businessman wanted their children to get educated in a convent run school.
Now all of a sudden some business minded people mushroomed private schools,so you feel that these convents school no more required.
But these convent schools still continue charity schooling and educate the poorest Indian and provide hospital care to the poorest people of this country.
Just for Rs.10 you get a OPD in Fr.Muller’s Hospital, can you show me one such hospital in this country?
I agree that few Baba’s have started some hospital care for free but they have huge funding from the devotees and foreign visitors and they are involved in conversions which is never highlighted by anyone.
All of a sudden you started realising that, you are losing certain percentage of votes and this will increase if you do not attack them now? Cowards !!!!!

When asked for water, the great high class religious people poured urine to his mouth.

    Great religious love?

This is BJP policy. They deceived voters by claiming they are for development.
