Lufthansa pilots extend strike till Friday

Berlin, March 19 (IANS): Pilots with Germany's national airline Lufthansa have extended their ongoing strike over a retirement dispute until Friday, a media report said on Thursday.

German pilot union Vereinigung Cockpit announced the strike late Monday night, Germany's international broadcaster Deutsche Welle reported.

Vereinigung Cockpit announced the extension on Wednesday night.

The ongoing strike has resulted in the cancellation of some 750 domestic flights. Around 80,000 passengers planning to travel on short and medium haul flights were affected.

The dispute concerns retirement benefits that Lufthansa wants to change for new pilots while increasing the age at which pilots can take early retirement.

Lufthansa pilots retire at age 55 and receive up to 60 percent of their pay until the normal pension at the age of 65.

The German airline faced a string of similar strikes in December 2014.
