Chennai Police chief gets NHRC notice


New Delhi, March 19 (IANS): The NHRC on Thursday issued notice to Chennai Police after a news channel was attacked recently for telecasting a controversial debate show.

Taking suo motu cognizance of the media report, the National Human Rights Commission has asked the police commissioner of Chennai to conduct an inquiry into the incident and submit a report within six weeks.

According to reports, the office of Tamil news channel 'Purthiya Thalaimurai' was attacked by right wing protesters on March 12 for airing a controversial show that debated the relevance of wearing "Mangalsutra" by women who were tortured or abandoned by their husbands.
